BACKGROUND: The Meb Keflezighi Invitational took life when Robert Dean, SDHS Track and Field Coach, envisioned bringing back the Balboa Relays—a showcase of county-wide track and field athletes—which were held in the historic Balboa Stadium until 1998. Dean partnered with Meb Keflezighi to make his dream a reality.

Meb Keflezighi is a role model and source of inspiration for athletes of all ages to achieve their own personal best. He is the only athlete in history to win the New York Marathon, the Boston Marathon, and an Olympic Medal. Meb is unwaveringly committed to promoting youth health, education, and fitness through his foundation, the MEB (Maintaining Excellent Balance) Foundation. The foundation's mission is to:

Empower Youth to Maintain Excellent Balance, Engage Children in Academics in and out of School, and Engage in Positive Life skills through Sports.

This is the fourth year Keflezighi is hosting the invitational track meet.
