Risk Management

The Risk Management Department protects district assets and provides services to ensure safe school and work environments. Risk Management provides services to the district regarding Liability and Property Risk control, Return to Work Program, Unemployment Insurance and Workers' Compensation.

Liability and Property Risk Control

The Risk Management Department manages liability claims and district property loss incidents for the San Diego Unified School District.

Return to Work Program

It is the policy of the San Diego Unified School District to provide, when possible, transitional work assignments for a limited period to assist employees who are temporarily restricted from performing their regularly assigned job duties due to an industrial or non-industrial injury or illness.

Unemployment Insurance

Unemployment insurance benefits may be available if you are:

  • Unemployed, or
  • Working less than full-time, AND
  • You are able, available, and actively seeking work.

Workers' Compensation

It is the goal of Risk Management in conjunction with York Risk Services Group, Inc. to ensure that the appropriate benefits are paid promptly and accurately to employees with work-related injuries/illnesses.

Workers' Compensation is a state-mandated program funded completely by the employer and is designed to guarantee the payment of specified benefits to employees who are injured on the job. The District is self-insured for workers' compensation benefits: as such, benefits are paid using district funds.

Voluntary Student Accident Insurance

The San Diego Unified School District does not carry medical or dental insurance for students injured on school premises, while under school jurisdiction, or while participating in school district activities. For these reasons, the District has made a student accident insurance program available for review and consideration by students' families. This insurance program is optional and complies with the California Education Code, which permits distribution of necessary information from the company providing the coverage.
