Next Generation Science Standards

Student pouring liquid during science experiment

The California Next Generation Science Standards (CA-NGSS) allow students the opportunity to experience rich science learning across their TK-12 experience. NGSS requires students to use the skills of scientists with the Science and Engineering Practices while developing their understanding of science content. Students will participate in Physical Science, Life Science, Earth and Space Science, and Engineering at all grade levels. Spiraling from the macroscopic world around them in the elementary grades through the microscopic world in the middle grades and eventually the sub-microscopic and abstract science content of the upper grades. This will allow students to develop a deep, working knowledge of science in individual disciplines and experience how the science cuts across disciplines with the Crosscutting Concepts.

For additional information, see the California State Department of Education's NGSS webpage.

NGSS for Parents

The CA Next Generation Science Standards allows students to grow as scientists and citizens. This will be accomplished through a progressive and coherent science curriculum that allows all students, TK-12, in San Diego Unified to experience science in the classroom.
