University City High School Marks Construction Milestone As Investment In Campus Transformation Continues
WHAT: District leaders and UCHS students will celebrate the official grand opening of recently completed Fabrication and Design program space, new athletic facilities and site improvements with a ribbon cutting ceremony before a varsity home game against Mar Vista.

VISUALS: Brand new facilities including a beautiful monument tower and stadium entrance, the football team will be warming up on the field as district leaders speak, ribbon cutting ceremony surrounded by cheerleaders, JROTC will present the Colors, marching band will perform the national anthem, and game kickoff.

PROJECT OVERVIEW:
Fabrication and Design: The existing University City High School wood shop and adjacent classroom space was modified to accommodate the new College, Career &;; Technical Education (CCTE) Fabrication and Design program. The project included minor revisions to existing interior space planning and direct connection between the equipment work area and an existing classroom to be utilized as a computer lab. The project also included replacing existing equipment with new technical equipment, new heating/ventilation/air conditioning, lighting, fire protection, and furniture, fixtures and other equipment.
Athletic Facilities and Site Improvements: The athletic facilities and parking lot upgrades project at University City High School involved a series of related projects that optimized the football field stadium, upper athletic fields, gymnasium, bus drop off and parking lots. The projects provided additional 6,722 square feet of support facilities include new restrooms, ticket booth, concession stands, storage buildings, and monument tower at the football field entrance. The parking lot improvements reconfigured the bus drop-off, vehicle loading zones and pedestrian paths of travel. Additional features included energy-efficient exterior LED lighting as well as new paving for student and administrative parking lots.
BACKGROUND: These projects are funded by San Diego Unified School District's Propositions S and Z, which are local bond measures approved by San Diego voters to repair, renovate and revitalize neighborhood schools. In addition to renovation and replacement, bond projects include classroom technology, facilities to support College, Career and Technical Education, classroom air conditioning, safety and security upgrades, and other facilities improvements at traditional and public charter schools throughout San Diego Unified. Prop. S is a 23-year capital facilities program that is funded by a $2.1 billion general obligation bond measure passed November 4, 2008. Prop. Z is a 15-year capital facilities program funded by a $2.8 billion general obligation bond measure passed November 6, 2012. By law, the funds cannot be used for teachers' or school administrators' salaries, nor can they be used for maintenance or operations.
