Joint-Use Park at Harriet Tubman Charter School

SAN DIEGO - The College East neighborhood now has a new grass playfield located at the corner of 68th st. and Saranac St.

The joint-use park at Harriet Tubman Village Charter School includes a new playground, a walking and running path, basketball and four-square courts, picnic tables, security fencing, and a grass playfield.

As part of the Play All Day initiative, the joint-use field will be accessible as a joint-use park after school hours and during school breaks.

"I just want to thank the school district [San Diego Unified] for partnering with the City of San Diego and continuing to expand greenery to all communities," said Georgette Gómez, Council President for the City of San Diego.

"We're so happy this field is ready and available for your use," said Dr. Sharon Whitehurst-Payne, Board of Education Trustee for San Diego Unified.

This project is funded by San Diego Unified’s Propositions S & Z, which are local bond measures approved by San Diego voters to repair, renovate and revitalize neighborhood schools.

"I really love this park; my favorite thing about this park is the field," said Tubman Charter School student Michael.

Council President Gómez also thanked Troy Murphee, a community advocate who pushed for the park.

Murphree released a statement on behalf of the community.

"We want to thank Council President Gómez for picking up over a decade of community advocacy and shepherding this long awaited park to completion," the statement reads.
