Top One Percent of San Diego Unified High School Graduates to be Honored at 'Salute To Excellence'; Outstanding Students in Class of 2018 Honored at Annual Event

WHAT: Salute to Excellence is the district's annual event to honor and celebrate the top one percent of graduating seniors.

WHEN: 4-6 p.m., Wednesday, May 30, 2017. Reception from 4-4:30 p.m.; ceremony begins at 4:30 p.m.

WHERE: Nautilus Pavilion, Sea World, 500 Sea World Drive, 92109

BACKGROUND: The event recognizes seniors ranked in the top one percent of their high school's Class of 2018. More than 80 students will be honored, including all high school valedictorians. Principals, counselors, parents and other family members will be in attendance along with Board of Education trustees and Superintendent Cindy Marten.

Ed Abeyta, UCSD Associate Dean and Director of Pre-College Programs, will serve as Master of Ceremonies. Marilyn Hannes, Park President of San Diego SeaWorld and Aquatica, will welcome the attendees. Diego Robles from Kearny High School is the student speaker. Musical entertainment is being provided by the Preservationists from Mission Bay High School.

This annual event brings together students from all San Diego Unified high schools, where they are announced by their principal, and receive a certificate and medal for their achievements. Some of the schools that students will be attending in the fall include Stanford, Cornell, Yale, Harvard, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego and UCLA.

PHOTOS/INTERVIEWS: Students and family members will be on hand to speak about their accomplishments and experiences. Each principal will introduce his/her students, and then move from the stage to outside the pavilion for photos; interviews can also be conducted there.
