BACKGROUND: The district completed more than 110 major construction projects, and has expended $1.32 billion. Fifty-three new classroom buildings were completed, replacing 371 old portable classroom buildings. Twenty-one College, Career and Technical Education facilities are complete and open, giving students an opportunity to explore college and career programs that better prepare them for the real world.
Innovation Centers are open at Morse and Crawford high schools, with plans to add additional Innovation Centers at Lincoln, Hoover and San Diego high schools in 2017. Marking a significant improvement in access to technology, 5,477 classrooms have been outfitted with 21st century interactive technology, and all K-12 students have individual computing devices.
Students and teachers are benefitting from the installation of air conditioning in the 2,000 hottest classrooms at 66 schools sites across the district. In addition, bond funds will be used to construct eight new solar projects in 2017, helping the district improve its usage of renewable resources.
San Diego Unified School District's Propositions S and Z are local bond measures approved by San Diego voters to repair, renovate, and revitalize neighborhood schools. In addition to renovation and replacement, bond projects include classroom technology, facilities to support College, Career and Technical Education, classroom air conditioning, safety and security upgrades, and other facilities improvements at traditional and public charter schools throughout San Diego Unified. Prop. S is a 23 year capital facilities program that is funded by a $2.1 billion general obligation bond measure passed November 4, 2008. Prop. Z is a 15 year capital facilities program funded by a $2.8 billion general obligation bond measure passed November 6, 2012. By law, the funds cannot be used for teachers' or school administrators' salaries, nor can they be used for maintenance or operations.
