Olivia Halter, The Aspiring Marine Biologist
Perfectly situated along the vibrant Pacific Ocean coastline, San Diego is an ideal location for any young person who sees a future in marine biology – a benefit University City High School senior Olivia Halter is not letting go to waste.
“So much of the ocean is unexplored -- it's always been a place that I've loved and has been very interesting to be around,” Olivia said. 
With aspirations to become a marine biologist, and with competitive college admissions, Olivia knew it was important to show participation in a related club. However, at the time she was looking to get involved, there were no ocean or beach centered clubs at her school. Instead of not joining a club or settling for something outside of her area of interest, Olivia took the initiative to start a Surfrider Foundation Club at University City High.
A student branch of the National Surfrider Foundation, the Surfrider Foundation Club focuses on ocean awareness and provides opportunities for high school students to engage in ocean and beach monitoring activities. In its initial year, the club participated mainly in beach clean ups. Student club members record what they pick up on the beach and share the data with the National Surfrider Foundation so they can use the information for legislative action.
“There definitely is an activist part of it,” Olivia said. “With climate change and everything that's happening in our world, it's up to us to take action. And I felt like there was a gap at UC High that could be filled with something that was meaningful in helping the community and the Earth in general. I knew that other students were probably thinking the same thing and that certainly there is a group of kids that would be like minded in that area and would want to join.”
After its first year, the club already attracted more than 30 student members. And plans are in place to continue expanding the types of projects the club will take on, such as ocean water quality monitoring. The club also received a grant from the organization Walking Softer that will allow them to analyze the environmental footprint of University City High and identify ways to reduce the school’s environmental impact.
“I think that would be really cool to leave some lasting environmental policies at the school and for the club itself,” Olivia said. “I am preparing this year to make sure that the Surfrider Club can stand without me once I graduate and that I'll be leaving behind something that more students can join.”

Perfectamente situado a lo largo de la vibrante costa del Océano Pacífico, San Diego es un lugar ideal para cualquier persona joven que vea un futuro en biología marina, un beneficio que Olivia Halter, estudiante de último año de la Escuela Preparatoria University City, no está desperdiciando.
"Gran parte del océano está inexplorado, siempre ha sido un lugar que he amado y ha sido muy interesante estar cerca", dijo Olivia.
Con aspiraciones de convertirse en bióloga marina y con admisiones universitarias competitivas, Olivia sabía que era importante mostrar participación en un club relacionado. Sin embargo, en el momento en que estaba buscando involucrarse, no había clubes centrados en el océano o la playa en su escuela. En lugar de no unirse a un club o conformarse con algo fuera de su área de interés, Olivia tomó la iniciativa de protagonizar un Club de la Fundación Surfrider en la Preparatoria University City.
Una rama estudiantil de la Fundación Nacional Surfrider, el Club de la Fundación Surfrider se enfoca en la conciencia del océano y brinda oportunidades para que los estudiantes de secundaria participen en actividades de monitoreo del océano y la playa. En su año inicial, el club participó principalmente en limpiezas de playas. Los miembros de los estudiantes registran lo que recogen en la playa y comparten los datos con la Fundación Nacional Surfrider para que puedan usar la información para laacción legislativa.
"Definitivamente hay una parte activista de esto", dijo Olivia. "Con el cambio climático y todo lo que está sucediendo en nuestro mundo, depende de nosotros tomar medidas. Y sentí que había un vacío en la Prepa UC que podría llenarse con algo que fuera significativo para ayudar a la comunidad y a la Tierra en general. Sabía que otros estudiantes probablemente estaban pensando lo mismo y que ciertamente hay un grupo de jóvenes que tendrían ideas afines en esa área y querrían unirse".
Después de su primer año, el club ya atrajo a más de 30 miembros estudiantes. Y hay planes para continuar expandiendo los tipos de proyectos que asumirá el club, como el monitoreo de la calidad del agua del océano. El club también recibió una subvención de la organización Walking Softer que les permitirá analizar la huella ambiental de la Preparatoria University City e identificar formas de reducir el impacto ambiental de la escuela.
"Creo que sería genial dejar algunas políticas ambientales duraderas en la escuela y para el club en sí", dijo Olivia. "Me estoy preparando este año para asegurarme de que el club Surfrider pueda apoyarme una vez que me gradúe y que dejaré atrás algo a lo que más estudiantes puedan unirse. "
