San Diego Unified School District has staff to help you enroll your child in Medi-Cal or Covered California health insurance.
For information about Insurance Enrollment and to find your child’s school case worker, please see the Insurance Enrollment Information document. The list of case workers is on page 2.
If you are unsure who to contact, you can call the District’s Health Services Case Workers at (858) 256-2948 or email [email protected] for assistance. You may also reach out to the health office at your child’s school.
Beginning the 2015–2016 school year, California public schools were required under AB 2706 to provide information to families about their health coverage opportunities and enrollment assistance. This bill takes advantage of the role schools can play in connecting children and families to health coverage and has the goal of increasing the number of uninsured children and families who enroll in health coverage.
Children (ages 0–18) can receive full Medi-Cal coverage regardless of immigration status. Undocumented minors are eligible, but they must still meet other requirements, including income limits, to qualify for Medi-Cal. For assistance, please contact one of our Health Services Case Workers.
Parents should not fear that applying on behalf of their children or dependents who may be eligible for programs will result in deportation or other immigration-related actions.
Note: Covered California open enrollment is available from November 1, 2025 through January 31, 2026. Medi-Cal enrollment is open year-round.
Please contact the health office at your student’s school for questions and to start the referral process.
