Bargaining Updates

February 6, 2020

The San Diego Unified District met with the San Diego Education Association for the second day of bargaining on Thursday, February 6, 2020. The parties began the day with a thorough discussion of the impacts and effects of the implementation of Healthy Start Times. The District proposed a Memorandum of Understanding.

SDEA passed a proposal on Article 29- Special Education. The parties spent the remainder of the day discussing support for the needs of educators; the District will present a counter proposal at the next bargaining session on March 5, 2020.

Update on Governor' s 2020-21 Budget Proposal

On January 28, 2020, the District provided an update to the public regarding the Governor' s proposed funding for K-12, click here to review this budget update. The update highlighted several specific concerns about the proposed budget, including a reduction to the cost of living adjustment (COLA). However, district staff also noted a clear alignment between the priorities of the school district and the Office of the Governor. For example, the district was pleased to note a shared commitment to equity and community-based schools.

January 23, 2020

San Diego Unified leaders and professional educators start contract talks

The San Diego Unified School District and the San Diego Education Association met for the first time on January 23, 2020, to begin bargaining a new contract; the current contract expires on June 30th of this year.

Summary of the January 23, 2020 bargaining session:

  • The parties established Ground Rules to keep the conversations productive.
  • SDEA passed a memorandum of understanding related to support for teachers who provide oversight to non-public schools. The District shared that we look forward to providing a response and discussing all Special Education related concerns after SDEA presents their Article 29: Special Education proposal at the next session so that the District can review all Special Education issues as a whole.
  • The District team affirmed that its goal for the current bargaining cycle is to project the progress we are making together far into the future. We want to work with our professional educators to ensure the values of excellence and equity take root across the District by looking to SDEA to raise the specific issues that are most needed. The District' s initial proposal pointed to several recent studies showing San Diego Unified students are making steady academic progress and pledged to work with educators to continue that progress.
