A new classroom facility is one “beam” closer to completion at La Jolla Elementary School. Students were joined by Board of Education President Dr. Sharon Whitehurst-Payne, La Jolla Elementary Principal Stephanie Hasselbrink, school staff, and construction crews Friday to sign one of the final steel beams for their upcoming classroom and student services facility. Moments after signing, the group watched as it was hoisted into place.

San Diego’s oldest high school is getting a makeover. San Diego High School will undergo major renovations with a Whole Site Modernization project that will transform the campus frontage on Park Boulevard, expand the central campus quad, and renovate classrooms and student support spaces. “We are thrilled to see these improvements come to fruition on our campus,” said Francisca Del Carmen, San Diego High School Principal. “We have 140 years of history at this site, now we get to make another hundred in the high quality facilities our students deserve.”

Nearly eight decades after Pacific Beach Middle School (PBMS) saw its first African-American educator, students joined community, district and city leaders Thursday to dedicate the joint-use field and community park to him and his wife. New signage now displays “The Fannie and William Payne Joint-Use Field and Community Park,” a symbol of the adversity the Paynes overcame in the 1940s.
