Environmentally Preferred Purchasing

Strategic Sourcing & Contracts is increasing their efforts to procure environmentally friendly commodities and services that promote sustainability. District solicitations support this effort by including sustainability requirements in certain bids and Request for Proposals (RFPs).

Through a competitive RFP process, the district awarded a contract with a waste and recycling service provider with the goal to create a partnership in further reducing the amount of waste generated at schools and administrative facilities. The contract is structured so that collection of recyclables is 97% less than the cost of trash collection, which serves to provide an economic incentive to reduce solid waste disposal from schools and administrative offices. The contract includes service of 515 trash dumpsters, 327 recycling dumpsters, and 105 landscape waste collection dumpsters across the district at schools and facilities. Collection of separated wood waste from the district mill shop, as well as green material from large landscape projects are included in this contract.

In 2015-16 over 2,100 tons of mixed recyclables (paper, plastic, metal, and glass) and 337 tons of landscape and wood waste were collected from district facilities and diverted from landfill disposal.

The district also contracts with a construction and demolition (C&D) debris recycling facility that recycles a minimum of 65% of the material delivered by the district from maintenance construction and demolition projects. In 2015-16 over 2,342 tons of C&D material was recycled. A separate scrap metal recycling contract is also in place (220 tons recycled in 2015-16).

Strategic Sourcing & Contracts has established performance measures required in the purchase of office, janitorial, and printer inks & toners in order to maintain "green" purchasing for these three high-yield commodities.

The attached document provides a procurement snapshot of these certified "green" commodities procured in the 2015-2016 fiscal year.
