CalPERS and CalSTRS Member Contributions
CalPERS Member Contribution Rates
Beginning July 1, 2018, employee contribution rates are changing for some members.
- Classic Members (joined prior to January 1, 2013) will continue to contribute 7% of reportable compensation.
- New Members (joined on or after January 1, 2013) under the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act (PEPRA) will contribute 7% of reportable compensation instead of 6.5%.

CalSTRS Member Contribution Rates
Assembly Bill 1469 was signed into law by the Governor as part of the 2014/2015 state budget. It increases the CalSTRS member contributions on compensation that is creditable to the Defined Benefit Program.This had previously been set at a rate of 8% of gross pay for all members.
Below are the rates in effect since the start of the 2015 fiscal year for:
- Classic Members (Hired prior to January 1, 2013):
Effective July 1, 2015 the rate increased from 8.15% to 9.2%.
Effective July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2021, the rate increased from 9.2% to 10.25%.
- New Members (Hired on January 1, 2013 or later):
Effective July 1, 2015 the rate increased from 8.15% to 8.56%
Effective July 1, 2016 the rate increased from 8.56% to 9.205%
Effective July 1, 2017 the rate 9.205% remained in force.
Effective July 1, 2018 the rate increses to 10.205% from 9.205%.
