SAN DIEGO - Construction on one of Pacific Beach’s oldest schools is officially complete. Crown Point Junior Music Academy (CPJMA) students held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday to celebrate the 78-year-old school’s major campus upgrades. Joined by district leaders, community members, and parents, choir students at the Transitional Kindergarten (TK) through fifth-grade magnet school showcased their singing talents before cutting the ribbon. “We wanted to integrate music into our celebration because music is what we pride ourselves on at CPJMA,” said Sakeenah Smith, Principal at CPJMA. “We are so grateful that our project brought us new music spaces and classrooms to build on our already impressive music program.”

A new grass playfield is officially open to students in Paradise Hills. Students at Pacific View Leadership Elementary School celebrated Friday with a student-led Pledge of Allegiance, remarks from school and district leaders, a ceremonial ribbon cutting, and a schoolwide recess as students were welcomed onto the new field for the first time. Replacing a decomposed granite field, the new two-acre grass playfield at Pacific View Leadership Elementary includes an asphalt walking path, trees and landscaping, a drinking fountain, and fencing to separate school and public areas. “This new field is an investment in our students’ health, wellness, and sense of community,” said San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Fabi Bagula. “We are proud to continue our partnership with the City of San Diego to create safe, high-quality spaces where students can learn, play, and thrive during the school day, and where families can gather after hours.”

It’s officially a new era for San Diego High School (SDHS), as its striking modern facade now welcomes students, staff, and the community to an upgraded campus. With red scissors, royal blue ribbon, students, and alumni, Monday marked the ribbon-cutting ceremony and dedication for the 144-year-old campus’s new student services and classroom facility.

SAN DIEGO - New and upgraded facilities at Pacific Beach Elementary School are now open and ready for use. On Monday, Pacific Beach Elementary School students joined leaders from the San Diego Unified School District, parents, and community members to celebrate the completion of their Whole Site Modernization project, which brought them a new Transitional Kindergarten (TK) & Kindergarten building, an expanded grass joint-use playfield, a secure main campus entryway, renovated classrooms, and shade shelters.

Two proposals – to develop the Fremont/Ballard Center and Revere Center into affordable educator housing – were approved Tuesday, January 27 by the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education. San Diego Unified staff will now complete due diligence and negotiate best-and-final term sheets on four properties, including the two approved on Monday, January 26.

The San Diego Unified School District Board of Education took action at a January 26, 2026 special affordable housing workshop to authorize staff to begin due diligence and negotiate best-and-final term sheets based on proposals presented by developers at the Eugene Brucker Education Center in University Heights and the former Irving Street Warehouse site at 2101 Commercial Street. The Board voted to advance the Protea + Malick and Mirka Investment proposals.

SAN DIEGO - One of the largest public investments in City Heights’ history is officially complete, as the George Walker Smith Education Campus was formally dedicated. Named after the first African-American elected to office in San Diego County, the George Walker Smith Education Campus houses the completely rebuilt Wilson Middle and Central Elementary Schools.

A community staple for 75 years, Crown Point Junior Music Academy (CPJMA) celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony for its Whole Site Modernization on Friday. SAN DIEGO - Reusable water bottles are now in the hands of 20,000 more students across San Diego. Made possible through the Rob Machado Foundation, the reusable bottles went to San Diego Unified School District students at 50 schools. The foundation also donated 500 reusable water bottles to Chavez Elementary students in April 2022 to encourage students to drink more water and cut plastic pollution from local landfills, waterways, and the ocean.

The San Diego Unified School District celebrated its newest school today, a campus that serves Mission Valley’s growing population and honors its rich history. Named after the indigenous village that once existed nearby, Nipaquay Elementary School - translated to “Our Other Home” - is the result of years of planning between San Diego Unified and the community. It is the district’s first school built in Mission Valley.

SAN DIEGO - Generations of San Diego High School alumni watched as the contents of a 1976 time capsule were unveiled and a fallen Army nurse and alumni was honored during the annual All Class Reunion Saturday. Inside the time capsule were an ASB constitution, pictures of the old school buildings, a videotape showing the demolition of the old building, shots of the then-new building, Election Day editions of local newspapers, a San Diego telephone directory, copies of the student handbook, and a 1976 yearbook.
