UTK Pre-Enrollment Window Opening at 118 San Diego Unified Sites for Upcoming School Year
January 31, 2023
SAN DIEGO – The Universal Transitional Kindergarten (UTK) “Pre-Enrollment Priority Window” for the 2023-24 school year opens Feb. 1 and continues through Feb. 28, 2023, providing San Diego Unified School District families opportunities to apply for a spot in programs offered at 118 campuses.
UTK is the newest grade level preceding kindergarten, open to all students who will turn age 4 by September of this year — children born between Sept. 2, 2018 and Sept. 1, 2019.
Priority is given to resident children who live within the boundaries of San Diego Unified, with additional priority given to children from oldest to youngest. Following the start of the new school year, any available seats may be offered to out-of-district students.
UTK instruction gives young learners an important foundational year before heading into kindergarten. Instructional hours are aligned with each school’s regular schedule. No more than 24 students are enrolled in UTK classrooms, which are staffed by two educators who help support social-emotional function, peer interaction, and create opportunities for discovery, exploration, and problem-solving. Literacy and math are woven into all learning areas. In addition, the individual interests of UTK students are taken into consideration when projects and/or activities are planned.
Seats for UTK will be limited at each campus. If enrollment in a family’s school of residence is full, enrollment may be offered at the nearest campus where space is available. Pre-enrollment ensures that a child’s information is in the system. Families will be notified of their child’s enrollment status by April 3.
