Sweetly tangerine

Minneola tangelos

Fresh from Wolff Ranch in Pala, Minneola tangelos are available on cafeteria salad bars throughout the San Diego Unified School District every Wednesday in April.

These sweetly tart treats are a cross between a tangerine and a grapefruit. They have a bright red-orange color skin that is easy to peel and a juicy flesh that has very few seeds. The Minneola's slightly bell shape with a protruding neck at the stem gives it its nickname " the="" honeybell."<="" p="">

The Minneola tangelos our students will be enjoying come from Wolff Ranch in Pala, a small, 10-acre citrus farm run by husband and wife Fred and Joanne Wolff.

Each month, San Diego Unified's Food and Nutrition Services features a different, locally grown fruit or vegetable on salad bars. Students of all ages have been enjoying fresh and healthy choices on salad bars in San Diego Unified School District cafeterias since 2003. The Harvest of the Month is part of the district's Farm to School Program.
