Press Conference to Mark Opening of the San Diego Unified 2018-19 School Choice Application Window at Newest Visual and Performing Arts Campus, and Announcement of Partnership with La Jolla Playhouse

WHAT: Press Conference to open the school choice application period for the 2018-19 academic year, plus announcement of new partnership between Sequoia Elementary School and the La Jolla Playhouse.

Students and staff at Sequoia Elementary School will showcase the Visual And Performing Arts programs at this new VAPA campus, one of the many offerings in San Diego Unified's school choice catalogue. Sequoia offers violin instruction, regular fine art lessons and galleries, drama and a theatrical performance in every grade level, and dance instruction to its students.A new collaboration between Sequoia and the La Jolla Playhouse will provide theater arts programming to students and professional development opportunities to teachers.

WHERE: Sequoia Elementary School, 4690 Limerick Ave., San Diego, CA, 92117

DETAILS: From Oct. 2 through Nov. 13, families can submit an application for enrollment to any district school outside their attendance zone with the Neighborhood Schools and Enrollment Options Office. Choice Applications may be submitted either online at sandiegounified.org/school-choice-application or in person at the Enrollment Center, 4100 Normal St., Annex 12.

School choice gives students the chance to enroll next year in magnet programs or schools outside their neighborhood boundaries. The program is open to all San Diego Unified students and those attending other schools in San Diego County, including charter schools.

Each year, more than 10,000 students apply for the school choice program, with more than 70 percent of them receiving a spot in their first choice of schools. Families within San Diego Unified will receive an enrollment catalogue in the mail. The catalogue is also available online in English at: https://www.sandiegounified.org/enrollmentguide and in Spanish at: https://www.sandiegounified.org/enrollmentguide-spanish

San Diego Unified offers personalized consultations for families who want to discuss their options with an enrollment specialist. The multilingual staff at the Family Welcome and Enrollment Center is available at 619-260-2410 or [email protected] to provide assistance Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
