A School Site Wellness Committee (SSWC) is a group of individuals who represent the school and community population. This can include teachers, counselors, school health personnel, administrators, food service staff, students, parents and community members.
The School Site Wellness Committee builds buy-in by involving the greater school community by providing opportunities for participation and decision-making. The council advises and advocates for school wellness programs and policies.
School Site Wellness Committees do not have to be new committees. Often schools have groups who already meet to address the health/wellness of students, staff or the environment. For example, 100 mile club? Some School Improvement Plans have health-related goals, interventions or strategies. School Site Wellness Committees should not be viewed as an "extra" committee but, instead, as a support or part of an existing committee.
