Health Requirements

👂👁️ Health Screenings

Hearing and vision screenings will be provided as required by state law at the following levels:

  • Hearing screening for all students in grades UTK, K, 2, 5, 8
  • Vision screening for grades UTK, K, 2, 5, 8
  • Vision in any grade for schools selected for the Vision to Learn or UCSD Eye program
  • New students and students referred by parents or school personnel

Please note:

  • Vision screenings may be performed by a school district nurse, or trained Vision to Learn or UCSD Eye mobile staff.
  • In some schools, an optometrist may be available to examine children who fail their vision screen, and glasses may be available if required.
  • In select schools there is no cost for vision screens, vision examinations or for provision of glasses. For schools where cost is incurred, reimbursement for vision exam or eyeglass services may be sought through Medi-Cal or the Children’s Health Insurance Program. Lack of insurance will not be a factor in receiving services.
  • Students with a known hearing loss may receive a hearing screening at any grade level. They are re-evaluated every three years.

Exclusions from Screenings: Contact your school nurse or principal annually regarding excluding your child from any of these screenings.

🦷 Kindergarten Oral Health Assessment (KOHA)

State law requires that all students entering public school for the first time (kindergarten or first grade) have an oral health assessment by a licensed California dental professional.

  • The assessment must be completed and submitted to the school by May 31 of the student’s first school year.
  • Assessments conducted up to 12 months before school entry are accepted.
  • UTK (Universal Transitional Kindergarten) students may fulfill this requirement early if the KOHA is submitted.

🏫 District-Provided Assessments

In select schools, licensed dental providers offer free KOHA services for UTK and Kindergarten students who have not completed the requirement. To opt out, notify your school in writing.

Waivers: Parents/guardians may opt out by signing the waiver section on the KOHA form. There is no penalty for not submitting the assessment.

  • Exams can be arranged through a personal physician or coordinated by the school nurse or coach.
  • New students are encouraged to submit recent physical exam records upon enrollment.
  • Parents may submit a signed statement to the principal if they choose not to consent to a physical exam.
