Mira Mesa High School Students Celebrate Construction Groundbreaking for Second Wave of Campus Improvements
February 13, 2024
SAN DIEGO - A second wave of campus improvements is officially underway at Mira Mesa High School.
A groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of construction on the second phase of the school’s Whole Site Modernization project, which will enhance campus security, build a new student services and classroom facility, convert the existing student services facility into classrooms, renovate aging classrooms and common areas, add a new visitor and administrator parking lot, construct shaded lunch court areas, and remove all remaining portable classrooms.
“At San Diego Unified, we are committed to creating schools where all students can thrive and feel a sense of belonging,” said Dr. Lamont Jackson, Superintendent of San Diego Unified School District. “I’m excited about all that Mira Mesa High School will offer students and staff with these exciting renovations to its campus.”
The celebration at the California Distinguished School included a performance from the “Sapphire Sound” drumline, remarks from district leaders and students, and a symbolic moment of placing shovels into the dirt.
Serving the community for 49 years, Mira Mesa High School has been recognized by the state for its exemplary College, Career, and Technical Education (CCTE) Program and offers hands-on CCTE programs in Arts, Media, and Entertainment, Engineering, Health Sciences, Hospitality, Manufacturing and Product Development, and Transportation. It also offers a variety of Visual and Performing Arts courses, competitive athletic teams, a JROTC program, and award-winning band, dance, and cheer teams.
“Our students work hard year-round and we are thrilled to give them facilities that will complement their hard work,” said Jeff Sabins, Principal of Mira Mesa High School.
Last spring, construction was completed on baseball field renovations, which included new grass infield and outfield, foul ball fencing, and a CIF regulation backstop at the baseball field, a new public address system and drinking fountain, replacement of the announcers' booth, repairs to the dugouts and batting cages, and upgrades to grading and irrigation.
The field followed the completion of the first phase of the Mira Mesa High School Whole Site Modernization project, which included the construction of a beautiful music building, renovations to existing classrooms, upgrades to collaborative workspaces in the media center, and the creation of outdoor learning spaces.
Other bond projects include CCTE Engineering, Automotive Technology, and Culinary Arts facilities renovations and photovoltaic panels over the parking lots on the north and southeast sides of campus.
“My children grew up in Mira Mesa and attended this high school, so it’s especially exciting to see these projects come to fruition,” said Sabrina Bazzo, Board of Education Trustee. “This is just one of many schools in my sub-district receiving campus upgrades. It’s wonderful to see the positive impact these projects have on students and families.”
Construction for the second phase of the Whole Site Modernization is anticipated to be completed in Summer 2027.
