Abbie Darling, The Climate Activist
Having successfully organized student climate walkouts for two consecutive years, studying AP environmental science, and doing internship and volunteer work for climate centered companies, Patrick Henry High School senior Abbie Darling has made an impact as a leader in climate activism at San Diego Unified School District.
“We are the future and we want our futures to be protected,” Abbie said. 
The latest climate walkout Abbie organized saw more than 1,000 students joining at their school to listen to fellow student speakers demand action from the government to declare climate change a national emergency. They also had an activity for students to paint their hands and stamp their handprint on a canvas with the message “The World is in Our Hands” as a show of commitment to positive climate action.
Abbie became interested in leading the student climate action walkouts and other awareness activities after she became involved with the non-profit organization Greenpeace.
“I had all this information and I felt like if I possessed this knowledge that it was my responsibility to share it,” Abbie said. “For me it was one small thing that really got me involved in. So if I could provide the information to do that for someone else, even if it's just one or two people at my school who get involved after attending the walkout, that would be really amazing.”
As an intern at a local environmental law firm, Abbie is heading a program that supports eco clubs at San Diego Unified schools. The program provides monetary support as well as toolkits to assist schools interested in starting environmental clubs and to help existing environmental clubs improve their activities, such as hosting impactful Earth Day events.
Looking forward, Abbie is co-leading an effort to establish a student led climate literacy task force for San Diego Unified School District. The group would involve students from across the district and focus on increasing environmental knowledge through educational programs and projects.
“If we keep having people who don't care about climate change, or aren’t even aware of the issue, then we're not going to solve this problem,” Abbie said. “The goal is giving everyone all the information they can possibly have.”

La última huelga climática organizada por Abbie vio a más de 1,000 estudiantes unirse a su escuela para escuchar a otros oradores estudiantiles exigir acción del gobierno para declarar el cambio climático una emergencia nacional. También tuvieron una actividad para que los estudiantes pintaran sus manos y estamparan su huella en un lienzo con el mensaje "El mundo está en nuestras manos" como muestra de compromiso con la acción climática positiva.
Abbie se interesó en liderar las huelgas estudiantiles de acción climática y otras actividades de concientización después de involucrarse con la organización sin fines de lucro Greenpeace.
"Tenía toda esta información y mesentía como si poseyera este conocimiento que era mi responsabilidad compartirlo", dijo Abbie. "F or me fue una pequeña cosa en la queme involucré. Entonces, si pudiera proporcionar la información para hacer eso para otra persona, incluso si solo una o dos personas en mi escuela se involucran después de asistir a la huelga, sería realmente increíble. "
Como pasante en un bufete de abogados local de medio ambiente, Abbie dirige un programa que apoya a los clubes ecológicos en las escuelas unificadas de San Diego. El programa proporciona apoyo monetario, así como herramientas para ayudar a las escuelas interesadas en iniciar clubes ambientales y para ayudar a los clubes ambientales existentes a mejorar sus actividades, como organizar eventos impactantes del Día de la Tierra.
Mirando hacia el futuro, Abbie está coliderando un esfuerzo para establecer un grupo de trabajo de alfabetización climática dirigido por estudiantes para el Distrito Escolar Unificado de San Diego. El grupo involucraría a estudiantes de todo el distrito y se enfocaría en aumentar el conocimiento ambiental a través de programas y proyectos educativos.
"Si seguimos teniendo personas que no se preocupan por el cambio climático, o que ni siquiera son conscientes del problema , entonces no vamos a resolver este problema", dijo Abbie. "El objetivo es dar a todos toda la información que puedan tener".
