About Toler Elementary School

A California Distinguished School

Toler Elementary School has a long-standing tradition of excellence, and we are incredibly proud to continue that legacy today. Our school is named after San Diego’s very first teacher, William P. Toler. A reminder that curiosity, learning, and community have been at the heart of this campus since the beginning.

At Toler, we believe deeply in fostering a strong sense of belonging for every child. Our dedicated staff, engaged families, and supportive volunteers work together to create an environment where all students are known, valued, and inspired to reach their highest potential. We focus on the whole child, nurturing academic growth alongside social-emotional well-being and connectedness.

Learning at Toler is rooted in collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. We encourage students to be active problem finders and problem solvers, exploring ideas, asking questions, and discovering meaningful connections. Literacy is woven into every aspect of instruction to support students in becoming thoughtful, articulate communicators.

Our instructional focus centers on valuing students as thinkers and learners. We are committed to making learning visible, honoring the process, and strengthening our questioning strategies to deepen understanding. By prioritizing curiosity and reflection over simply getting the “right answer,” we are building a culture of inquiry where students confidently share their thinking. Just as important, we foster positive relationships that help both staff and students feel safe to take risks, learn from mistakes, and grow together.

Our SPLASH program anchors our schoolwide commitment to social-emotional learning. Through SPLASH, students practice kindness, integrity, perseverance, self-awareness, and global citizenship, creating a campus where every child feels welcomed and empowered.

Toler’s small-school, family feel combined with our long-standing tradition of excellence, strong student achievement, and unique mid-century campus. This creates an extraordinary elementary experience. Each day, it is a joy to watch our mission come to life as our students grow into literate, dynamic thinkers and respectful leaders, ready to soar in an ever-changing world.
