VAPA Showcase Accompanies Opening of Seaport Village SDUSD Student Visual Art Gallery

Posted: Thursday, May 2nd 2019

Having recently hosted San Diego Unified School District’s (SDUSD) cross-border public art exhibition entitled “Birds Without Paradise,” Seaport Village now sets the stage for a long-term partnership with SDUSD through the debut of a new brick-and-mortar, student visual art gallery.

Located within Seaport Village, the gallery will open to the public on Saturday, May 11th and will creatively activate a 640-square-foot building in Seaport Village’s Lighthouse District, the easternmost sector closest to the San Diego Convention Center. As an extension of Seaport’s commitment to supporting local arts and culture through meaningful collaborations, the SDUSD Art Gallery at Seaport will spotlight a rotating selection of artwork in various mediums. The artwork will be curated from more than 80 classes of over 12,000 students from Pre-K through 11th grade. The gallery will be open each week Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. “The arts are alive and well in San Diego schools, and with this partnership, our students will have a platform to showcase their performances and display their art for thousands of locals and visitors,” says Russell Sperling, Director of Visual and Performing Arts for the San Diego Unified School District.

To celebrate the debut of the SDUSD Art Gallery, Seaport Village will host a “Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Student Showcase” on May 11th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This free and family-friendly event will feature high school students from San Diego Unified School District, who will take their talents to the stage to show off their singing, acting, dancing and other incredible artistic talents.
