On Saturday, February 1, 2020, the SDUSD Middle School Honor Band and Orchestra performed their annual concert at Point Loma Nazarene University’s Brown Chapel. Participating students, who auditioned in November and rehearsed for several weeks leading up to the concert, represented 15 middle schools from around the district. Over 130 students were involved in the concert.

The Middle School Honor Band was conducted by Dr. Karen Koner, Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Music Education at San Diego State University. The Middle School Honor Orchestra was conducted by Jane Frey, the Associate Director of the Mainly Mozart Youth Orchestra. The program spanned two centuries of music, including works by classical composers such as Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, contemporary composers such as Frank Ticheli, film music by John Williams, and popular music by Mick Jagger. The groups were managed by SDUSD music educators Maureen Flynn and Joshua Prout, and assisted by Ted Foster and Honseng Tu.
