Understanding the Schools List

Field NameDescription
Location CodeThe location code is a 3-digit, numerical code used to uniquely identify schools within the district.
Short NameThe abbreviated name of a school.
Long NameThe full name of the school.
TypeSchools are categorized by type according to grade level range. Note that grade range may differ from year to year in some cases. As a result, the type may change from year to year as well.
  • Elem: Elementary schools are schools with grade ranges that fall entirely within K-6.
  • Midd: Middle Level schools are schools with grade ranges that fall entirely within 6-9.
  • SrHi: Senior High schools are schools with grade ranges that fall entirely within 9-12.
  • Atyp: Atypical schools are schools with grade ranges that do not fall entirely within any of the above categories. For example, a K-8 school is considered an atypical school.
  • Alt: Alternative schools are schools that serve students with special needs or require special considerations. These include special education, continuation, opportunity, independent study, and community day schools.
Grade RangeThe minimum to maximum grade levels of students at the school. Note that grade range may differ from year to year in some cases.
TrackThe calendar used by a school. Most schools either use a year-round or traditional track. However, some schools have a unique calendar that is used.
CharterAn indicator to identify charter schools within the district.
CDS CodeThe County-District-State (CDS) Code is a 14-digit, numerical code used to uniquely identify schools within the state. The CDS Code for a school may change if a school closes and later re-opens. Since the County-District portion of the code is the same for all schools, this table shows only the 7-digit State code portion of the CDS.
NCES CodeThe National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) Code is a 12-digit, numerical code used to uniquely identify schools within the country.
Primary CDSThe Primary CDS field indicates if the given location is the primary location used for state reporting purposes. In certain cases, more than one location may be reported using the same CDS code.
