School Update (2-23-2016)

Get Involved and Stay Informed (02-23-2016)

Good evening, Principal Olivero here with your weekly school update.  Am not sure if you noticed, but we believe in competition at UCHS.

Play ball!  That’s right, our baseball and softball teams are starting practice today on their new fields!  What a great day to get the arms and bats in shape.  Hats off to the Varsity Baseball Team who participated in the Cal Ripken’s Jr. baseball camp held at the Clairemont Hilltoppers Little League Field last Saturday.  What a great time for these young players and it’s nice to see our older students helping them.

Also last weekend our Science Olympiad Team hosted the regional competition where over 26 of the top county schools participated.  Our students had a number of first place finishes and combined to finish in 5th place among the top schools in the county- quite an accomplishment for UCHS.  The team now heads off to STATE competition.

This week we learned that the school’s JROTC Academic Team did it again.  Competing against the top schools in the state, the Team scored high enough to make it to the national competition in Washington, DC., in June.

It’s CIF time for our sporting teams.  The Girls’ Water Polo team fought hard to make it to the quarterfinals last Saturday in Division I.  The Wrestling CIF Qualifiers also competed over the weekend earning a number of spots on the podium.  The Girls’ Soccer Team is taking on Hilltop HS in the opening round play at UCHS.  This match was played at 5 pm tonight in our stadium.  At 7 pm, the Girls’ Basketball Team kicks off play against Vista HS in North County.  We wish our lady teams well.

Enough competition?  Not yet.  This Friday Night it’s on!!!  It’s the Student versus Staff annual basketball game in the gym at 6pm.  After never losing to the students the last two years, there still remains a questions to whether the student referees were paid off or at least influenced. As a result, staff is biting at the bit for Friday night.  I really am not into predicting an outcome in these types of events, but let’s just say I have given out to staff free fitness cards leading up to Friday’s main event.  Again, that’s at 6 pm in the gym.  And parents, please be ready to console your student Friday night! Ha!

Shifting gears, if students have not already paid for their AP exam, have them do so ASAP.  For those not wanting to pay on-line, APTS will be on our campus during lunch on March 8 and 15 to accept cash or check payments.  Students must complete their registration ahead of time online at http://aptestservice.com/uchs. The registration deadline for AP exam payment is March 18. See the UCHS website for more details.

Please mark this day and time on your calendar.  On Sunday, March 6, 2016, at 5:30 pm, the WASC Team will be setting a time to meet parents/community members, boosters, SSC and SSGT members.  It is held on Sunday afternoon so that the school community can participate in the process.  We hope that you will attend to show the WASC team members your school pride!

Last, we can’t thank our awesome parents enough.  Many of you have adopted a UCHS staff member as part of the UC Secret Cents program.  I can tell you that it is having a major impact on staff morale.  I sometimes hang back and watch our staff open their card or box.  It’s truly special to see their appreciation.  Thank you for this continued gesture.  You all rock!!

Have a great week, Mr. O.
