School Update (11-09-2016)

Good evening, Principal Olivero here with your school update.

Tonight and tomorrow night will be the last two nights to see UC’s Performing Arts: Almost, Maine.  This is a dinner theatre event.  Show times are at 7PM and tickets can be purchased online.

Also tonight, a record number of 59 students will earn their distinguished lab coats to begin the process to serve and learn in the local health care industry.  As part of the school’s platinum Bio Med Program, students will start serving in local hospitals.

Congratulations to our CIF teams still in play: Water Polo faces Grossmont tomorrow, at La Jolla, Field Hockey will play Saturday, time to be determined, and football hosts the first round of playoffs at UC Friday night, at 7pm. We also give a big shout out to our band program who will be going up to Riverside this weekend to compete in the last show for the scoring season.  At this point, they are in good position to qualify and compete for the STATE Championship.

We will not have school on Friday, November 11, 2016, as it will be Veterans Day. Speaking of which, did you know it was first called Armistice Day.  Back in 1918 the Allies and Germans met to end “the Great War.” This took place at the 11th hour, on the 11th day, on the 11th month. The next year, 1919, the Armistice Day was celebrated recognizing those who fought in World War I.  Then in 1938 the name was changed to Veterans Day to celebrate all military personnel who have served our country.

Last weekend I saw Hacksaw Ridge.  It is a true story representing tremendous faith and loyalty.  The movie is intense, bloody, but if you can stomach this part of it, I would encourage our students to see it with their parents.  I think as the years have passed, our young people do not know the ugliness of war and understand the depth of loyalty that people signed up to serve and protect our great nation.  With this deep appreciation, we will not have school on Friday, but honor those who have served our country.

Have a great week and an excellent Veterans Day!

Mr. O.
