Get Involved and Stay Informed (11-07-2017)
Principal Olivero here with your weekly school update.
Tonight is the Winter Sports Parent/Coach meeting at 6:30 pm. If your student is participating in a winter sport, your attendance is highly recommended.
As a reminder, tomorrow is an early out day and students will be able to meet with their teachers from 1:15 pm to 2:35 pm. The support time is designed to allow students the opportunity to speak with their teachers about retaking tests, completing projects, assignments, or maybe completing extra credit work? Please know we have canceled all athletic and extracurricular activities during these times to allow students a means to meet with their teachers. We have also scheduled extra after school buses to make sure students have a way home after the scheduled support time.
Also as a heads up, after school tomorrow (12:59 pm), you may see some teachers along the sidewalk of Genesee Ave. demonstrating (picketing). The District and SDEA (Teacher’s Union) are currently in negotiations for the next labor contract. As a result, some of our teachers may exercise their 1st amendment right. Please know that this is a planned demonstration by the Teacher’s Union and that our staff members have agreed to hustle back to their rooms by 1:15 pm to meet with their students needing additional support.
Tomorrow, November 8th, at 2:30 pm, in the media center, the SSGT and SSC will again meet to discuss stakeholder views regarding LCAP spending priorities for the district next year. All are welcome to join this conversation.
Ok, check it out, check it out! Not that I care about competition, lol, but I am proud to announce many of our Centurions teams are having great success. For the fall sporting season, we so far have three league champions: Field Hockey, Girls’ Volleyball and Football. This afternoon, the boys and girls cross country teams also compete for league titles- not sure how they did yet. CIF playoffs have started and most all teams have advanced. Tonight, in our gym at 7pm, our girls’ volleyball team plays in the CIF semifinals. Please come out and root them on. The football team has been seeded number one for the playoffs and will have a first round bye and they start their playoff run next Friday night in our stadium.
Also check this out… our marching band and color guard competed in the Mira Mesa tournament last weekend and again took first place. Additionally, the band won what is called the sweepstakes. This means they had the highest scored earned by all bands (20 of them) that competed in the competition. They compete again this Thursday night at Serra High School before heading to the state competition next weekend. At this point, they are ranked second in the state for southern California.
Have a good evening and have a great week. -Mr. O.
