Get Involved and Stay Informed (09-7-14-2016)
Good evening! This is Principal Olivero providing your weekly school update.
Please know we have started our very popular EdUCate a very popular Math Academy program after school for students. On Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays Ms. Luc in room 432 will house this special support program for students. Because we try to match up help one-on-one, please spread the word that in addition to providing support, we need mentors to help mentor students in the area of math. So if we have any students who could help and need to gain community service hours, or have available parents or retired grandparents who aren’t working, please contact Ms. Byrd at firstname.lastname@example.org and she will connect you with Ms. Luc.
Next Thursday, September 22nd, starting at 5 pm, we will be holding our annual Back-to-School Night. At 6 pm, we will start our classroom visitations. Please calendar this date as more information will be coming home regarding this important school community event.
Coming up for underclass students on September 22nd and September 29th, and for seniors on September 20th and September 27th, will be our picture make up days. This is a day for students to take their school picture for their photo ID cards and for seniors, to take their senior portrait, if they missed this opportunity in August.
Coming up will be the PSAT for students in grades 9 through 11. The PSAT is offered on campus on Wednesday, October 19th. The cost for students in grade 10 is free. The cost for students in grades 9 and 11 will be $15. The test is particularly important to 11th graders as the test can be used to be a national merit qualifier. Potentially, students can earn scholarship funds as a result of their test results. Test results also will be used to determine possible AP potential. The $15 dollars needed from students in grades 9 and 11 needs to go to the school’s finance office so that the tests can be ordered. This needs to be done ASAP.
Looking ahead, the Counseling Department will hold their College Night on Wednesday, October 5th, in the auditorium. This will be an important meeting- particularly for our seniors and their parents as we will review the application process for colleges. Please calendar this date.
On Thursday, October 6th, the PTSA and I will be holding our monthly meeting in southeast San Diego. More details will be sent regarding this meeting. We are moving the meeting to an evening time slot and location to allow those who normally can’t make the early Friday morning meeting can receive school updates.
Last, an informational letter was sent home with students yesterday explaining district’s sex education materials and curriculum has changed a bit as a result of new state legislation. If a parent wants to review the new materials, it will be available at a Back-to-School Night table and parents are to notify Vice Principal Jo McGlin if they want their student excluded from the mandated sex education information that will occur later in the school year.
Have a great week, UC U-Know! -Mr. O.
