Get Involved and Stay Informed (09-11-2017)
Good evening! This is Principal Olivero providing your weekly school update. And to let you know, at school today we held a brief moment of silence for the lives lost 16 years ago on 9/11.
This week is big for use as this Thursday, September 14th, starting at 5 pm, we will hold our annual Back-to-School Night. At 5 pm, the Food Trucks will be here to start selling food. From 5pm to 6pm there will be a number of meetings which includes ELAC and Title I, School Site Governance Team Parent Elections, Student Clubs, and a host of other presentations. Room visitations will begin promptly at 6:15 pm. Please know that finding a parking place will be a challenge. There is a football game Thursday afternoon as well as volleyball in the gym. We suggest all parents arrive earlier than normal to find available parking on or off campus.
Also regarding Back-to School Night, a letter will be sent home to parents, via their student, that outline the evening’s events in greater detail. As part of this letter students will be asked to write down their schedule so that parents know what classes and periods to attend. We will have extra schedules in the attendance office, but just know we are counting parent tardies. As we say to the kids, walk and talk… and don’t be late!
Finally with regards to Back-to School night, in the school’s registration materials, it explained that parents could review the sex education materials and curriculum for the district. If a parent wants to review the new materials, it will be available at a Back-to-School Night table and parents are to notify Vice Principal Jo McGlin if they want their student excluded from the mandated sex education trainings that will occur later in the school year.
Next week, Tuesday, September 19th, we will have our picture make up day. Any student who missed registration and did not take their picture, needs to get their picture taken on Thursday the 19th.
Coming up will be the PSAT for students in grades 9 through 11. The PSAT is offered on campus on Wednesday, October 11th. The cost for students in grade 10 is free. The cost for students in grades 9 and 11 will be $16. The deadline for payment for the PSAT is Friday, September 22nd. This is an important exam for our juniors in that it can qualify them for National Merit Recognition.
On Thursday, September 14th, ASB will be holding their Club Rush event at lunch. This is a chance for students to join one of 63 clubs on campus. We believe at UCHS that all students need to join and participate in an extracurricular group on campus. It makes school more enjoyable and is a great way to meet friends with common interests. So be ready Cents, Club Rush is coming!
Have a great week and we will see you all on Thursday night, UC U-Know! -Mr. O.
