School Update (09-10-2018)

Principal Olivero here with your school update.  I have several items to share so if I get cutoff, please visit the school website under school news.

First, please know we appreciate how most all abide by the traffic rules to keep everyone safe.

Now that we are underway, however, I am noticing people are arriving later and later which is resulting in some parents wanting to shortchange the necessary protocols.  In the first case, I am seeing a few parents dropping off students along Genesee Ave, along the red curb.  This is a no-no! Even more problematic, we have had a few parents dropping off students across the street on Genesee- where their student jaywalks while trying to dodge cars to get to the other side.

We’ve also had a number of drivers who are clogging up traffic by taking too long to drop off their student.  When pulling over along the drop off curb by the front parking lot, please drive all the way forward.  In other words, don’t just stop to drop off when there is opening when there is a gap in front of your vehicle, please move up to allow more cars drop off access. Once dropping off, please have your student ready to disembark as soon as possible.

This last part is critical…our students are watching how consistent we are with our messaging. In other words, if we break the rules, how are we to expect that they will when we are not around? Please plan to arrive earlier to avoid having to shortchange the protocols.

This Wednesday night, September 12, we will be holding our fall Parent/Coaches night meeting.  It will be held in the auditorium at 6:30 pm.  All parents of a fall athlete should be in attendance to hear about CIF, district, and school rules pertaining to eligibility. Everyone should also be familiar with coaching protocols and school safety procedures.  Please plan to be in attendance.

Coming up will be the PSAT for students in grades 9 through 11. The PSAT is offered on campus on Wednesday, October 10th.  The cost for students in grade 10 is free.  The cost for students in grades 9 and 11 will be $16.  The deadline for payment for the PSAT is Friday, September 21st.  Make a payment to the finance office.  This is an important exam for our juniors in that it can qualify them for National Merit Recognition.

Did your student miss taking their photo ID?  The photographers will be back on campus Thursday, September 20th, to take school pictures. If you have a senior who has not taken their senior photo, they are taking pictures by appointment. This may cause your student to have a Saturday appointment time. If your senior has not be notified for their time, please email contactreyman@gmail.com

Starting next Monday, September 17th, we will start issuing lockers on campus. As many know, we give seniors first crack and by Tuesday, we allow all other students a chance. We do not have enough lockers for all students and ask that students get a locker partner. Lockers will be issued out at Lunch on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.

This Thursday, September 13th, ASB will be holding their Club Rush event at lunch.  This is a chance for students to join one of 63 clubs on campus.  We believe at UCHS that all students need to join and participate in an extracurricular group on campus.  It makes school more enjoyable and is a great way to meet friends with common interests.  So be ready Cents, Club Rush is coming!

And last, please reserve Thursday night, September 20th, as we will hold our Back-to-School Night at UCHS.  It will be from 6pm to 8pm.  More details to follow.

Have a great week!   Mr. O.
