Get Involved and Stay Informed (05-15-2018)
Principal Olivero here with your weekly school update.
Today we evacuated 350 students out of the west 200 building for 40 minutes. There was a strong gas odor in the rooms and we decided to evacuate to determine the origin of the gas smell. The instructional day for our 350 Centurions resumed after San Diego Fire, SDG&E, and district staff determined the odor was not a gas leak or harmful to students. It appears the source of the odor was a defective water heater in the 200 west building.
Tomorrow will an early out day for students.
This Friday, May 18th, we are encouraging our students to take advantage of our early bird textbook return. This means we will help as many students as we can by allowing them to return some of their books early. We will still have our normal textbook returns in early June, through our English classes, but we wanted to try to get a jump start on the process. As a result, we are trying out a new early bird return process for students.
If you have a family you know that is new to the area, please let them know that we are enrolling new students for next year on Friday, May 18th, in the media center.
Staring next Monday, May 21st, UCHS will go through two weeks of state testing for our juniors. These exams are important to both our students and for the school. To provide the necessary time for testing, the school will be having a block schedule for these days. Monday will be periods 1, 3 and 5 and Tuesday will be period 2, 4 and 6.
For our seniors, on May 21st and 22nd, our PTSA has organized a series of speakers to address various Like Skill topics. Class of 2018 students will hear about: resume writing, interviewing skills, managing money, picking the right health care, confirmed consent, etc. These topics are not always discussed in classes and we felt the block scheduling format would allow us this opportunity. Hats off to parent, LeeAnn Anderson, for pulling this together for us.
Last, especially for seniors, this coming Saturday is the last opportunity to make up tardies and unexcused absences for senior activities. Saturday success school is from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm.
Have a great week, Mr. O.
