Get Involved and Stay Informed (02-02-2016)
Good evening, Principal Olivero here with your weekly school update.
We have started the second semester and for those who have signed up to use the PowerSchool for parents, you should be able to access grades first semester grades on Friday. Please know that semester report cards will be mailed home via the district and everyone should expect to see them in about 2 weeks from this Friday.
Please know that the school’s WASC 240 page self-study report is complete and is now posted on the school website under School News. For those interested in learning more about the school over the last five years, please view the document as it has a lot of information in terms of school achievement results, professional development plans, student activities on campus, etc.
It is already time to start plans for the next school year. Over the coming days, I will be holding a few meetings to discuss the school’s anticipated budget for next year and will want input for how best utilize the funds the school receives. Please stay tuned for future announcements for when these meetings will be held. Tomorrow night, we will be meeting with Standley parents to discuss course options for their students for next year. On Thursday night, February 4th, at 6 pm, right after the PTSA meeting, the UCHS counseling team will meet with 9th grade, 10th grade and 11th grade parents and their students to review course options for next year. There are a variety of new college classes and new career pathway courses not formerly offered at UCHS. We are very excited about these new opportunities for our students. The event is always a well-attended event, so please plan to arrive early.
As mentioned, the PTSA will have several events the next two weeks. On Thursday evening this week, at 5 pm, they will be featuring guest speaker, Kristen Paruginog. Kristen will be on hand to talk about Break the Silence against Domestic Violence. February is Teen Dating Awareness month and the PTSA wants our students and parents to be aware of the warning signs and supports that are in place for domestic violence victims.
Also this week, Friday night on February 5th, the school’s PTSA will be holding another West Coast Swing session where students and adults can learn how dance with a partner. I went to this event several weeks ago and it was a lot of fun and I did learn some new moves. The session involves everyone and one does not need a date as the sessions involve everyone in attendance. The session starts at 7 pm in the gym and the cost is $7 in advance for parents and $5 for students, and $10 for adults and $7 for students at the door.
Need to stay or get in shape? On Saturday, February 6th, at 11am in the stadium, some of our finest Biomedical students have organized a Heart and Sole Relay Event to raise money and awareness for helping the fight against Leukemia and Lymphoma. Registration is $10 and we hope to see you there.
On Tuesday night, at 4:30 pm, please consider attending the Girls’ Water Polo match as it will be senior night at the UCSD pool. We hope to see you there, on deck!
Finally, next Thursday night, February 11th, the long awaited evening with San Diego’s famous linguist, author and columnist Richard Lederer will be on hand to provide an evening of language and laughter. This event is being sponsored by the PTSA and we hope all will mark this day down on their calendar.
