Get Involved and Stay Informed (01-29-2017)
Good Evening! Principal Olivero here with your new semester school update. Please pay attention to the message as there is important budget information all should know.
This will be a big week for us at UCHS.
On Monday, January 30, 2017, we will hold two assemblies for students who qualify. The assemblies are for 10th and 11th grade students who are doing well in school and have one or more teacher recommendations for taking an Advanced Placement course, and have not taken AP class before, and for students who scored well on the PSAT and have what is considered AP Potential. As a school philosophy, the research shows that students are five times more likely to complete college if they take rigorous coursework in high school. And since 93% of our students surveyed said that they are wanting to attend a college after high school, we are seeking to expose as many students as possible to the rigors of an AP, Honors or Community College class.
On Tuesday, January 31, 2017, UCHS will be reaching out to our 8th grade middle school students at Standley where all 8th graders students will spend their school day at UCHS. The day is devoted to “Unlocking the Genius” for our incoming students for next year. This event will be an all-day experience with a special pep rally that showcases our clubs and groups on campus. We want all students to not only be excellent students, but also connected to their school by participating in extra-curricular activities. Many of our current Centurions will be facilitating this important day.
On the evening of Wednesday, February 1st, from 6 to 7:30 pm, UCs Guidance Department will be holding a meeting for parents of all current students in grades 9-11. UCs counselors will be sharing information about what courses to select for next year. As a change, students and parents will be given access to go online to make these course requests. Please come to this meeting to stay updated and informed and know that we will have Spanish translation services for this meeting.
Last, Thursdaty afternoon, February 2, 2017, at 2:45 PM, all are invited to provide input regarding the potential 2017-18 budget allocation for next year. At this point, the district looks to run a 124 million dollar deficit next year unless cuts are made. These cuts are expected to come from Central Office, as well as from schools. At the meeting we will be holding a simultaneous meeting for School Site Governance members as well as for School Site Council. At this point, we have not received our budget allocation for next year, but I should have these numbers at the scheduled meeting for Thursday, February 2, 2017. At the meeting, I will detail how the school has used the funds allocated in the past, as well as possible initial thinking for how to use the dollars for next year. The purpose of the meeting, however, is to hear from you. Please know that we will have Spanish translation services for this meeting. So know that all students, parents, and staff are invited to present and learn what considerations are made to run and operate a school.
Have a great Sunday night and week ahead. Mr. O.
