School Update (01-20-2016)

Get Involved and Stay Informed (01-20-2016)

Good evening!  Principal Olivero here with your school update.

Semester finals will be coming up for students next week.  They will be on the January 27, 28 and 29.  Each day there will be two periods.  School will be getting out at the end of lunch at 11:59 AM.  We wish all of our students the very best with their finals!

For students in Advanced Placement classes, it’s almost time to start paying the exams given in May.  The online ordering service for test payment will open starting Thursday, January 25, 2016.  It will remain open for a month or more for students/parents to make their payment for AP tests.  The cost is $93 an exam.  If a student qualifies under the Free and Reduced Lunch Program, the cost for an exam is $5.  A student ordering a test who is on the Free and Reduced Lunch Program needs to first pick up their key code number from the finance office in order to use the number when ordering the test(s).

On the evening of Thursday, February 4, 2016, the counseling department will hold a meeting to share information about the course selection process for next year.  Information will be shared as to how a course sequence will allow a student to graduate from high school and be college-admissions ready.  The Forum, the listing of courses offered at UCHS, has been updated and will be put on the school’s website very soon.  The meeting on February 4th is for students in current grades of 9th, 10th and 11th.

Yesterday, school officials met with members of the district’s traffic division to discuss how best to manage traffic (vehicular and pedestrian) coming onto and off campus.  We continue to be concerned about students walking across Genesee to get to the other side of the street.  We also have concerns about the speed of cars coming down Genesee.  Last, we continue to have vehicles drive up the wrong way on Genesee to use the turnaround divide on Genesee.

This traffic violation involves both students and parents.  The reason I bring these important concerns up again?  I want to ask if we happen to have any parents who know folks in the traffic division for the City.  We want them to take a look into putting in some possible signs, flashing lights, and structures to reduce the illegal traffic patterns.  Please know we will also be contacting the City ourselves, but wanted to see if there was a personal contact that might be able to expedite attention to these issues.  Please let me know.

As shared a week or so ago, UCHS tomorrow will again host perspective families wanting to possibly attend UCHS next year.  Tours will begin outside of the Attendance Office starting at 12:30 PM.  For those who are planning to submit a Choice Application for the 2016-2017 school year, the submission deadline is February 15, 2016.  Please let your neighbors and friends know if interested.
