Get Involved and Stay Informed (01-07-2018)
Principal Olivero here with your first 2019 weekly school update. Happy New Year Cents!
I will be having a few callouts this week as we are scheduled to have an important School Site Governance and School Site Council Meeting on Monday, January 14th. There are three main issues we will be talking about and voting on that impact all stakeholders. Soon, we will post the New proposed Dress Code Policy for the school. Before SSGT members take a formal vote, we want to make sure all stakeholders (students, staff and parents) view the policy and weigh-in with their respective representative. The new proposed dress code policy will soon be posted to the school website. I will let you know when it is up and posted.
At the SSGT/SSC meeting on Monday, we will also be voting on increasing the number of potential community college classes held on campus. The proposal will be to add a new Math 140 College (Precalculus) Course for the first semester and Math 150 (Calculus) course for the second semester. Many students at UCHS has taken Honors Precalculus at UCHS, but this option would allow a student to earn double weight and earn college credits. The second class we want to consider adding is an elective College History of Rock Music Course. Our school community should know that UCHS offers the largest number of community college courses out of all high schools in San Diego. We are hoping to allow our students access to these new courses as well.
The third SSGT/SSC topic will be what type of school schedule to have for the 2019-2020 school year. As many know, the SSGT last year voted to change to a late school start time for Wednesdays this year versus the prior early out format from prior years. In order for the SSGT to make an informed decision for next year, please go to the school website and weigh-in for what schedule you think makes the most sense for your student. Students, parents, and staff are being asked to complete this posted survey regarding school starting time for next year. Please remember a change was made this year to provide teens a later start time to provide them a greater amount of sleep on Weds. The research shows that given the circadian rhythm of high school aged students, their bodies are not ready for sleep until much later time at night which makes them sleep deprived the next day. Please make sure to weigh-in by visiting the school website.
Last, the 2019 Senior Grad Party Committee will be having its next meeting on Monday, January 14th at 7pm in the Media Center. They are looking for parents of all grade levels to come out help and be a part of this event. Please know the Senior Grad Party Committee needs parents from all four grade levels. As one group of students and their parents graduate, the next the next group new parents need to step up. It’s a great way to get involved in the school and to be in the know! They ask I share that their next meeting will be Monday night next week at school in the media center.
More to come this week! Roll tide!
