School Closure Update #11 (Friday, April 10, 2020)
Good afternoon Centurions, this is your end of the week update. The second part of the update will address what I know for the Class of 2020, our seniors.
In reviewing the data, as part of our soft launch for the week, we’ve had roughly 400 students log in to communicate with their teachers. I believe this number will jump considerably each day as we have more teachers and students ready for teaching and learning. I know everyone is working hard as 56 of our 70 teachers have indicated they will be using, Zoom, Canvas, and Google Classroom to work with our students. The others are still taking PD classes to be ready for the 24th of April.
University City High School is following county, city, state, and district guidelines regarding Stay at Home and social distancing. Therefore, students and families are NOT allowed on campus at this time. This means UCHS will not be able to allow students on campus to access any textbooks, other instructional materials which include student and PE lockers. We will continue to evaluate the guidelines of the county, city, state, and district and provide updates on access to campus. Online resources are being made available on learning platforms to supplement the need for textbooks.
Our teachers, for one hour, will have a one-day-back to school later in April where they will be able to pick up materials needed for personal use and distance learning. This same day band parents will be able to pick up their instruments from Mr. Corenman. We have not set up this plan, but we will be emailing his band kids to let them know about our plan for pick up and distribution. The one-day-back for teachers looks to be on April 21, 2020.
We will also have a one-day-back timeframe for parents to pick up medications they have for their student that is in the nurse’s office. Stay tuned for when this will be. It may be the 21st or another day.
The rest of this call out is for the Class of 2020 and their parents. It’s not positive news update but things can change as new information and updates are happening daily. The information I share is coming from the district for all high schools.
Senior Prom, Senior Movie Night, Senior Powder Puff Game, Salute to Excellence, Students versus Staff Basketball/Brains/Softball and Seniors Awards have been cancelled. All seniors should know, however, we are still working on Senior Awards and making sure we celebrate our seniors and get them their duly earned scholarship money. Whether this happens virtually or in person later this summer.
What to do about Graduation and Commencement is still be discussed by district staff.
Senior GradNite and Senior Disney Trip are two events not associated with the school. PTSA runs these events for parents and students. As of April 9, GradNite has NOT been cancelled. If Disneyland and GradNite and PTSA cancel these events, all monies will be refunded.
Yearbook Distribution - Yearbook distribution will be addressed once the shelter-in-place order has been lifted and we receive approved dates and protocols for returning back to our campuses.
Please know seniors we will be working hard to capture as many of these events as we can if given permission. Stay strong Class of 2020! We miss you!!
