Tierrasanta Elementary offers a well-rounded curriculum that nurtures critical thinking skills and enhances the educational experience for children in grade TK-5th. Our devoted staff, active and supportive parents, and high-achieving students make our school one of the best in San Diego Unified!
Tierrasanta Elementary School is a quality neighborhood school established in 1974. Our student population consists of 35% white students, 30% Hispanic/Latino students, 13% Asian, 7% African American, 14% two or more races, and 1% other. 40% of our students are Socioeconomically disadvantaged and 10% of our students have disabilities. 12% of our students are English Learners.
Tierrasanta Elementary is a family friendly, community oriented school through which several generations of families have passed. The principal herself is a TES alumni! Parent involvement is high at Tierrasanta and the active School Foundation raises large amounts of money each year to support the school.
We offer many extra-curricular activities for our students during the school day including weekly music taught by professionals for every 4th and 5th grade student. Students have the option of participating in chorus, orchestra or instrumental music. Every student in the school, grades TK-5, has weekly Spanish Instruction (funded by the Foundation). We also have an active Student Council which runs our school and community recycling program (which brings in funding for our school). Our Kiwanis Kids club for 3rd-5th graders that meets weekly and is involved in philanthropic activities. The TES science club is open to all 4th and 5th graders and meets weekly at lunch. Additionally, all students at TES may participate in our before school running club (run by a parent volunteer) and many participate with their class at the start of school as well.
Our Foundation and parent volunteers sponsor the ART Core Program at TES which consists of a monthly art lesson for each classroom taught by a trained parent. All art pieces are saved throughout the year and displayed at the end of the year at the annual Open House event. At that time students are invited to take their art home!
Academics at TES are critically important and this year all teachers are using the Lucy Calkins Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop and accompanying mentor texts. For math they follow our district created modules which include pieces from The Georgia Units, Engage NY, and the district adopted Envision Text Book. Our science program consists of one hour of science weekly taught by a credentialed science teacher in the science lab and one to three additional hours of science taught by the classroom teacher using FOSS kits (times vary per grade level).
This year, our ELA and Math SBAC test scores came back the highest in our Serra Cluster (5 elementary schools) and among the highest in the district. 71% of our 3rd-5th grade students met or exceeded grade level standards, 63% of students met or exceed math standards, and 77% of our 5th grade students met or exceeded the grade level science standards. This is a baseline and we look forward to upward growth this year!
