William H. Standley

William H. StandleyWilliam H. Standley

William Harrison Standley (December 18, 1872 - October 25, 1963) was a United States Admiral in the Navy.  He served as the 6th Chief of Naval Operations from 1933 and 1937. He also served as the U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union from 1941 until 1943.
He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1895 and served during the Spanish-American War, the Phillipine-American War, World War I, and was recalled to serve during World War II.  He was relieved of active duty on August 31,1945 and retired in San Diego where he lived until his death.
 
In addition to Standley Middle School, the Admiral WIlliam Standley Recreation Area in Northern California and the USS William H. Standley (CG-32) are named in his honor.  After the USS William H. Standley was decommisioned in 1994, the ship's bell was donated to Standley Middle School and is displayed in the Media Center.
