Philosophy

The SDSCPA Dance Department Faculty are professional dance artists and educators. Our curriculum is sequentially designed to prepare our students with the technique, skills, and knowledge necessary for postsecondary and professional pursuits. We are committed to preserving the lineage of classical, contemporary, and theatrical concert dance forms. 

Vision

The Dance Department of the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts is dedicated to providing a focused education that challenges students physically, artistically, and intellectually to prepare students for collegiate, conservatory, and professional pursuits in dance.

Mission

The mission of the Dance Department is to cultivate an inclusive, nurturing, and creative environment conducive to the highest caliber of dance training. Our curriculum features a rigorous scope and sequence with foundations in classical ballet and modern dance. In addition, our program features training and performance opportunities with industry professionals for every student at every level. All students will complete a culminating capstone project encompassing their learning demonstrating portfolio readiness. Throughout the course of Dance Major program, students are guided toward successful completion of a capstone project in either choreography, performance, or historical review.

High School Scope and Sequence

Freshman:
Required: Ballet 1/2, Modern 1/2
Recommended: Artist in Residence Course
 
Sophomore:
Required: Ballet 3/4, Modern 3/4
Recommended: Dance Elective (Jazz/Tap 1/2)
 
Junior:
Required: Ballet 5/6, Modern 5/6, Choreography
Recommended: Dance Elective (Jazz/Tap 3/4)
 
Senior:
Required: Ballet 7/8, Modern 7/8, Artist in Residence: Dance Portfolio
Recommended: Jazz/Tap 5/6 By Audition Only
 
*Every semester students will be adjudicated by dance faculty using a departmental rubric and will be placed appropriately according to their level.
 

ABT Program

 
ABTSDSCPA is proud to include the AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE® National Training Curriculum, a breakthrough 9 level program that combines high quality artistic training with the basics of dancer health and child development. The ABT® National Training Curriculum consists of a comprehensive set of age-appropriate, outcome-based guidelines to provide the highest quality ballet training to dance students of all ages and skill levels. Ballet classes at SDSCPA are taught by ABT® Certified Teachers, Annette Barcelona and Ellen Warkentien.
