The end of the second grading period, P2, is this Friday, November 30. Progress reports will go home with your student on Friday, December 7. This is the last 6 week snapshot before the end of the 1st semester. It is a dynamic grade and does not become permanent until the end of the 1st semester in late January. It also prompts conversations about how to become successful in middle school. Please encourage your student to reach out to his or her teacher to learn how to improve grades. This could include turning in missing assignments, redoing a big project or test, or attending individual teacher tutoring. School-wide tutoring is also available on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday every week. Visit our website for the schedule.
Get ready... Get set...for the 6th Annual Schoolyard Dash 5K and Fun Run!! This fun, community event benefits our Pacific Beach Secondary Schools - PBMS & MBHS. Come enjoy a great morning on the bay with friends, schoolmates and community members. Register now before prices go up! Go to http://schoolyarddash.org for details.
Community Service: At this time of year, we know many families give back to their communities. Our goal is for PBMS students to contribute at least 11,230 hours of service this year. This breaks down to 10 hours from each 6th grader,15 hours from each 7th grader and 20 hours from each 8th grader in the form of a community project. Last year students contributed over 15,000 hours to our different communities. Students log their hours on page 23 of their planner and the supervising adult signs off on it. The advisory teacher will do periodic checks and collect the log on May 3rd. Ms. Sims has many opportunities for students to volunteer and posts this information on our Facebook page and the student video bulletin found on our website. Thank you for all that you do to make our world a better place.
Triple your help! Get funky with Socks for the Seasons and help someone walk. Socks make great gifts and your purchase of a three pack will help fund service at PB Middle, help purchase a prosthetic leg for someone in need, and a free pair of all-weather socks will be donated in your name to a teen staying at the Storefront Shelter. Come to the Builders Club office on Mondays or Wednesday at lunch to get your Socks for the Seasons or go to our Builders Club link on our school webpage to purchase online.
Questions or Concerns: If you have questions or concerns over the next 4 weeks, please call the school or e-mail the administration: Vice Principal Kupper at email@example.com or Maureen Nolan at firstname.lastname@example.org. Mrs. Meng will be out until January 7, 2019.
In an effort to minimize interruptions to instructional time and help our students become more independent learners; deliveries of non-academic, non-health related items will no longer be accepted at the front office for student distribution. This includes money, lunches, gifts, shoes, PE clothes, jackets, food delivery services, etc….In addition, phone messages and office phone usage will be limited to emergencies only. Messages to coordinate after-school plans or similar topics will not be delivered. Please take this as an opportunity to help develop alternate plans with your student so that they can take personal ownership of their school day.
School safety: To keep the school safe, we ask for students, parents, and the community to report any concerns. Send an email to Mr. Kupper or Mrs. Meng anytime to report safety concerns. For issues that need immediate attention during school hours, you may call the front office at 858-273-9070. After hours, you can reach the San Diego Unified Police at 619-291-7678. On the weekends, call the San Diego Police department at 619-531-2000 and of course dial 911 in an emergency. We appreciate your support. Our school is safer when we all work together.
Schoolwide Tutoring: There are opportunities for students to get help with homework from 2:30-3:30 after school! The schedule is:
Math - Mondays - Mr. Ketchum - Room 217
English - Tuesdays - Ms. Kerby - Room 117
Social Studies & English - Mondays, Tuesdays & Thursdays - Ms. Duren - Room 123
Community Project - Tuesdays & Thursdays - Ms. Sims - IB office in the Media Center
The PBMS apparel website is LIVE!!! We’re excited to promote PBMS pride and promote our school in the community. This is also an ASB FUNdraiser and a percentage of proceeds go back to ASB. Please spread the word! Here’s the link: https://initialimpression.orderpromos.com/PBMS
School Tours are in full swing. Please invite your neighbors and friends to our monthly tour so that families can learn about our programs. The next one is Thursday, January 10 from 8:00am – 9:15am.
Student Drop Off and Pick Up: Thank you parents for using patience when dropping of your children. There is improvement in the mornings, however, it could still get better. As our students say while in the lunch lines, “No cutting”. Wait in the line to and from the drop off zone. When cars “cut” in and out of the line, accidents can occur. It only takes a few extra minutes to demonstrate patience to our children who will be driving in a few years. At pick up, again, pull forward in the loading zone. If it takes a while for your child to get to the car, consider parking to the left when you enter the lot. You will be closer to the exit. The video can be found on the school website and in the email of this message. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GZmUmKx4oI&t=42s
