Blue STEM Brings Learning to Life

Because of our proximity to the ocean and bay, Pacific Beach Middle and Mission Bay High Schools have always turned toward local waters and water-initiatives to connect classrooms to the real-world. Recognizing our inter-connectedness with water, SDUSD has partnered with the Mission Bay Cluster to formally establish a Blue STEM pathway. Learning experiences for PB Middle School students include:

  • Outdoor Floating Marine Lab student experience
  • SeaWorld Ocean-Link Lab Blue STEM backstage tour for students
  • UCSD Scripps Oceanography student tour
  • The Maritime Museum and Texas Instruments teachers and administrator training
  • The Maritime Alliance and Ocean Alliance Conferences for teachers and administrators
  • Collaborative project-based learning for PB Middle and Mission Bay High School math, history, science, and design teachers

To bring learning to life students will continue to develop outdoor learning opportunities for students and traditional curriculum to understand and take action with water. We look forward to increasing the number of IB Community Projects focused on Blue STEM pathway related issues and increasing students' knowledge of careers and opportunities available in San Diego's blue economy.
