Aloha Chesterton Ohana (family),
Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year. I am excited to be leading this wonderful neighborhood school for my fifth year as Principal and looking forward to strengthening my work with all stakeholders of our school community to provide a rigorous instructional program, safe and secure campus, and an aesthetically pleasing and positive learning environment that supports our school community's work to ensure student achievement for ALL students. I am extremely proud to be the Principal of Chesterton Elementary School, which I know is truly an amazing place for both children and adults.
Let me also take this opportunity to introduce myself. I was born and raised on the island of O’ahu, which is where Honolulu, the state capital of Hawai’i, is located. I moved to San Diego in 1992 to bowl collegiately on the San Diego State Aztec bowling team, which was nationally ranked at that time. I have a B.A. in Liberal Studies, a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential and M.Ed. in Cross-Cultural teaching from National University, and an Administrative Credential through the Educational Leadership Development Academy (ELDA) and M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from the University of San Diego.
Professionally, I have worked in the district for 21 years. I began my work with students as a teacher’s aide before becoming a teacher (Rowan & Pacific Beach Elementary). I have taught Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grades (Zamorano, Kwachiiyoa (former SDEA Charter School), Bethune, and Mason Elementary). Along with my classroom experience, I have had leadership experiences as a Reading Recovery Teacher (Chollas-Mead & Perkins K-8), Peer Coach/Staff Developer (Perkins K-8), Project Resource Teacher (Perkins K-8), Beginning Teacher Support Provider (Perkins K-8), Dean of Students (Perkins K-8), and Vice- Principal (Audubon K-8 & Doyle Elementary) and Principal (Franklin Elementary). Simultaneously, I worked part-time as a sales associate for Lakeshore Learning Materials for two years and 12 years as an Educational Consultant for Whoo’s Smart in Mira Mesa. I believe my variety of experiences have enabled me to gain valuable knowledge in understanding the roles and responsibilities we each play in shaping young minds to be lifelong learners and prepared for the 21st Century.
I look forward to meeting all of our new families to Chesterton and working collaboratively towards contributing to even greater success for our school in the future. Please be sure to introduce yourself if you see me out and about the campus. Have an amazing 2017-2018 school year!
Mahalo (Thank you),
