Meet Principal Michelle Riley

I am proud to serve as principal of Louisa May Alcott Elementary, a gem of a school that is both small and precious. I am a New Orleans native and began my teaching career in the South before coming to California more than 25 years ago.

I became an educator because I like entertaining children. Yes, entertaining, for good education is not static lectures but engaging material that captures a child's attention and sparks the learning experience. Our staff works hard to keep our students engaged through action-based learning. We supplement our science curricullum to ensure students get science instruction every day -- all students from kindergarteners on up. We offer enrichment opportunities galore including second language instruction in Spanish and German.

Our student achievement has been on the rise and I'm making it my priority this year to address the gaps in achievement. We have had success rewarding students who raise their achievement levels with the chance to do art or cooking or computer games so we can focus on the smaller groups of struggling students.

One of my favorite things about being a principal is working with our active Parent-Teacher Associationi. The members have brought so many imaginative programs to our school and sponsored field trips that make school so much more interesting for our kids. They've gone to the Star of India, whale watching and gone aboard the Floating Sea Lab plus the Mission to Mars at the Reuben H. F.eet Science Museum.

There's so much happening at Alcott, thanks in part to our wonderful community partners including San Diego Police Department, University of San Diego and SDSU. I invite you to come see for yourself what makes Alcott special.
