Principal's Message

April 5, 2020

Hello Muirlands Families,

We are all missing our Muirlands students and families during this time. I hope everyone is well and staying safe at home.

We begin a soft launch of our distance learning on Monday April 6, 2020. This is new for all of us; we are practicing a growth mindset. We will have more schedule updates for classes as the week progresses.

Make sure your student checks for information and assignments from their teachers. They can check the teacher’s Google Classroom, or the teacher’s webpage.

Muirlands’ Laptop Distribution has a scheduled time and place. Laptop computers may be picked up this Friday, April 10, 2020 from 9:00am to 12:30pm at Clairemont High School, 4150 Ute Dr. San Diego 92117. See this attachment for details: Family Communication Device Distribution

Cox is offering free internet, see Cox Connect2Compete internet program for details.

Contacts: Please email the following staff if need assistance with any of these issues.

I frequently talk about the importance of structures and routines. I know that schools and classrooms with high levels of structures and routines provide better opportunities for children to learn. The same is true with these times with your students at home…structures and routines are critical. Please think about the structures and routines that you can establish at home, a place and a daily time for learning.

All families please copy and paste or click this link https://forms.gle/Tzni4bZ834vb8gUQ7 to complete the survey before April 7th.

Thank you.

Hello Muirlands Families,

I hope that you and your loved ones continue to be safe and healthy.

On April 6th, our teachers will be launching into distance learning. This is a soft launch. We are working up to full implementation of distance learning in all classes for all students by the 27th. Many teachers have already begun this process prior to Spring Break.

As we move into digital learning for all students in the San Diego Unified School District, our goal is to support every student in need attending school in SDUSD with access to a device and internet by April 27th.

Last week I sent a survey for technology needs. SDUSD has sent a separate survey for us to completePlease fill out the survey EVEN IF YOU ALREADY COMPLETED THE PREVIOUS SURVEY.  We apologize for this inconvenience.

We need your assistance in assessing the technology needs of all Muirlands’ students. If we do not get a response from you, we will be calling to verify your child's needs, and this may delay access for those in need of a device.

The district will contact you for directions on how to obtain the device(s) and/or the internet.  This communication will include the distribution plan for all students in need.

All families please copy and paste or click this link https://forms.gle/Tzni4bZ834vb8gUQ7 to complete the survey before April 7th.

Thank you.

Hello Muirlands Families,

Tuesday evening SDUSD released the long-term plan for distance learning. As noted in the SDUSD communication, we will not be grading assignments until April 27th. Muirlands will continue to hold the expectations for students to participate and learn.

Beginning April 6, 2020, Muirlands is moving forward with teachers contacting all students through email and providing assignments for students. Please have your student check their teachers’ Google Classroom or this Muirlands’ staff webpage. Teachers will also be starting to set up platforms, such as Zoom, for students to participate with online video conference sessions. This, setting up online learning and video conferencing, is new learning for most of us. As with everything, we will get better the more we use these new learning tools. Our goal is to do the very best with teaching and learning for all of our students.

I frequently talk about the importance of structures and routines. I know that schools and classrooms with high levels of structures and routines provide better opportunities for children to learn. The same is true with these times with your students at home… structures and routines are critical. Please think about the structures and routines that you can establish at home, a place and a daily time for learning.

Journaling can be a wonderful Life Skill; here is a link to an article on how student journals may be a primary source for what we are all experiencing. "Students’ Journals Could Be ‘Prismary Source’"

We need to have every family complete this form. So far we have 502 submissions. We will be using this information to establish needs such as computers and internet access for distance learning. Please take a few minutes complete this survey

Thank you.

Hello Muirlands Families,

This has been a week like no other in history.

I hope you and your families are well and taking care of yourselves.

I find I struggle with not being able to control what has been the normal parts of my daily life. I need to step back and realize that I can only control what is in front of me. I need to keep a routine and think about how I can help others that need so much more than my family and me.

As we think about the future and getting back to a normal routine, there is much uncertainty.

Even with so much uncertainty, I know we are ready to meet the challenge of moving forward to support our children, families and community.

Last week I announced that our district leadership had set up 10 days of extra-curricular resources specific for grade and content areas to engage students. These resources are designed to take us through this upcoming week. Many of our teachers are posting activities to their google classrooms and reaching out to students and families. Mrs. Cox, our Art teacher, has asked that I share her teacher webpage with art resources. https://sites.google.com/a/sandi.net/mrs-cox---art-7-8/

We, SDUSD, our students and our communities, are moving into a new realm for K-12 public education. We are diving into supporting our over 100,000 students and teachers with distance learning. This is an enormous endeavor. SDUSD talked to principals about 2 phase for this to occur. In Phase 1, we need to make sure teachers have the tools, professional development, and curriculum necessary to develop and deliver distance learning that is engaging and provides opportunities for our students to make academic progress. In Phase 2, we need to make sure all 100,000+ of our students have devices suitable for distance learning and access to the internet.

I will be engaging with our teachers daily to facilitate the development of our distance-learning plan. This is a new realm; we are working to bring lessons to your children.

I will be sending daily updates. I am hopeful that many of our teachers will jump in ahead of the district timelines and we will start to see some distance-learning opportunities this week.

Thank you.

Hello Muirlands Families

This is Principal Martin with information on instructional resources.

SDUSD has developed an instructional resource page to provide families in San Diego Unified School District support during school closures. You will find activities, lessons, and digital resources to engage your child during this time. There is an informational video and links to access resources to use with your child at home.

San Diego Unified School District, KPBS and the San Diego County Office of Education have collaborated on a plan to provide for continuity of learning for all students. “At-Home Learning: Where Children Matter” includes a broadcast component with standards-aligned programming in blocks by grade level and a digital component with access to an online library of free PBS educational resources. The link below will take you to a page with information on accessing these resources.
