A Message from Principal Martin

Dear Muirlands Middle School Learning Community,

I am honored to have been selected as the Principal of Muirlands Middle School.  I am looking forward to the next few weeks, getting to meet students, families, staff, and getting back to the work.

I was born and raised in San Diego. My wife, Nancy, and I have two children Ryan, 35, and Kyle, 33, who both attended Bird Rock, Muirlands and La Jolla High School. My community involvement includes: six years of coaching youth soccer league, ages four to twelve; eight years of coaching youth baseball, ages six to fourteen; one year as the vice-president and one year president for the youth soccer league. I taught middle school science for ten years, served as a vice principal for seven years and have spent the last seven years as Principal of Sandburg Elementary in Mira Mesa.

I believe a leader must be available and responsive to parents, community, and staff. A leader must organize the efforts of all stakeholders so that they can work together as a purposeful community focused on providing the best opportunities for the students to develop understandings, make meaning, think critically, develop socially and develop emotionally.

It is important for us to recognize that technology will play a vital role in the lives of our students.  Muirlands, and SDUSD, have been working to improve technology infrastructure as well as instructional practices. Our students are growing up in a digital age where critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity are foundational to learning.

The use of technology extends beyond the classroom, it is critical to the way we communicate to parents and community. Our school website has a calendar, student assignments, staff directory/email contacts, and much more information. In addition, the Muirlands Foundation is a significant and long-standing contributor to our school’s success. Please make sure you are signed up to receive the weekly e-Blasts

Our Muirlands mission is to inspire and prepare students to reach their full potential as highly literate learners, prepared to meet the challenges of a global and technological society, while maintaining high standards, enhancing character development, and providing a range of educational experiences. Our goals include:

  • Infusing literacy and state content standards into all curricular areas.
  • Raising all students' achievement to a level of meeting or exceeding standards.
  • Promoting student involvement in the school and in the community.
  • Expanding communication and involvement between parents and our school.
  • Increasing teacher collaboration across grade levels and disciplines in order to create and maintain a positive culture of achievement.
  • Leveraging 21st century skills to support critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity.

I believe our children represent our future. Please feel free to contact me directly if I can be of any service. I look forward to a wonderful school year and many years of working with the Muirlands Community.
