Good evening Morse families. I hope all is well with you. This message is mainly for the families of our graduating class of 2020.
I want to thank you ALL for your patience during this time. Many of you have reached out to me regarding updates with this year's graduation plan, but until yesterday, I did not have clear instructions to share with you.. Yesterday, high school principals received information regarding graduation that I am now able to share with you. I have also attached a letter from our superintendent, Cindy Marten.
Graduation Ceremony Update
District leaders, the SDUSD School Board, and Associated Student Body (ASB) Council met this week to discuss plans for a potential graduation ceremony. Please know that SDUSD, the ASB Council, and Morse's senior class representatives empathize with you and your families during this time. We understand the significance and importance of each and every milestone during the senior year. The ASB Council and senior class representatives have expressed their deepest desire to maintain the possibility of postponing a traditional graduation ceremony, for a later date this summer, when it has been deemed safe to hold such events.
As that possibility remains uncertain, the SDUSD, ASB Council, and Morse's senior class representatives support the planning and designing of a celebration on or before June 9th for every high school in the district, with the hope that a traditional graduation ceremony can be held at a later time.
With this in mind, principals have been instructed to collaborate with their senior class representatives to begin to plan the best possible way to celebrate the Class of 2020 on or before June 9th that will allow for each and every one of our seniors to be recognized.
All school principals were given guidelines regarding celebrations on Thursday, May 14th. These guidelines state that we are to...
Create a senior video or slideshow, with input from senior students, that highlights/recognizes our senior class of 2020. This video can include teacher goodbyes and encouraging words from admin and staff; pictures/videos of seniors sent in by seniors; and/or messages from family (submitted and pre-approved by administration). This video or slideshow will go live on June 9th. NOTE: I am paying a professional to have this video done. It will be a nice tribute to Morse's Class of 2020.
- Celebrate our seniors on the day that seniors pick up their caps and gowns, diploma covers, graduation programs, etc., schools can celebrate their seniors by having decorations, banners, posters, displayed. (This day is still to be determined). I have also purchased each of our seniors a "senior yard sign." Even if this is not placed in a student's yard, I believe it is a nice keepsake. I have attached the sign for you to see now.
IMPORTANT: Senior students want to have an in-person ceremony prior to the end of the summer. However, in the event an in-person ceremony cannot be safely held before the end of the summer, Morse will host a virtual graduation in either July or August. I will share further communication with families including specific details for our school site.
Cap and Gown and Tassel: Morse High's Senior Class has decided to PAY for EACH senior's graduation cap and tassel. Typically, each senior has to pay to keep their cap and tassel. If any senior wants to keep their graduation gown, he/she will have to pay for this.
Senior Yard Sign: I have also purchased each of our seniors a "senior yard sign." Even if this is not placed in a student's yard, I believe it is a nice keepsake. I have attached the sign for you to see now. Seniors will pick up their sign when they pick up their cap and gown, diploma covers, and other items.
Refunds: Partial refunds will be issued to students who purchased the SAC Card. We have not been given the green light to issue refunds at this time. Please know that ALL students who should receive a refund, will receive a refund based on events not attended or items not received.
Yearbooks: We have a limited amount of yearbooks available for purchase. If a senior student still wants to purchase a yearbook, he/she can do so. The information is listed below. Since there are only 40 yearbooks left for purchase, this will be done on a first come, first served basis. Deadline to purchase is June 19, 2020.
School Code: 8261
Access to Campus: Students still cannot come on campus to clean out their PE Lockers or return textbooks. Once I have more information, I will notify you all.
Thank you again for your patience during this time. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.
