“It’s Peanut Butter Jelly Time”- Local High School Culinary Arts Students Set to Defend Sandwich Making Title at 2nd annual, PB&J Sandwich-Classic.
Come support your Morse Tigers Culinary Students as they compete in this event.
On Saturday, April 6th, 2019 (10AM-2PM), in celebration of National Peanut Butter & Jelly Day, teams comprised of culinary arts devotees representing the ranks of both amateur and professional chefs, will gather in the Balboa Park Club to compete in the 2nd Annual, PB&J Sandwich-Classic. The “Classic” features some of the most creative uses of peanut butter and jelly that ever graced two slices of bread. And, after the last of the peanut butter has been spread, and dollops of jelly top off their culinary creations, we will know the answer to the question: Who makes the best peanut butter & jelly sandwich in San Diego?
The idea for the fund raising event came from Retired SDPD officer, turned master jelly maker, Matt Weathersby. In 2016, Weathersby’s Escondido based Jellybear Jelly Company built the longest peanut butter and jelly sandwich ever made on a military vessel. The “unofficial” world record setting sandwich covered over 300 feet of the flight deck of the USS Midway Museum and served nearly 1,000 visitors.
The winning sandwich at last year’s inaugural PB&J Classic consisted of a Thai chicken, glazed in mandarin orange marmalade, covered in peanut butter and finished in a Panini press. This culinary creation was the brainchild of students from San Diego’s Morse High School’s culinary arts program. The “hungry tigers” will be back this year to defend their title. Also returning, second place finisher A&S Catering and BBQ from Ramona. “Team-A&S” wowed the crowd with their 9-hour smoked pulled pork which was later caramelized in strawberry habanero jam, and topped with peanut butter
Fact: You can’t make a PB&J sandwich without the “PB” (peanut butter)! With that in mind, Pacific Beach Peanut Butter has once again stepped forward. For the second year in a row the locally-owned peanut butter company will supply each team with one of their premium peanut butter flavors. When a call went out for the loaves of bread needed for the 4-hour competition, Deanna’s Gluten Free Bakery of Escondido came through. The totally gluten free bakery will provide the estimated 250 loaves of fresh baked (gluten free) bread that will serve as the canvas for each chef’s culinary works of art. According to bakery owner, Deanna Smith, “This is a great way to celebrate National Peanut Butter & Jelly Day and at the same time help support these special athletes.”
For just an $8.00 donation at the door, you not only gain entrance in to the PB&J Sandwich-Classic, you also get to sample all of the culinary creations and vote for your favorite sandwiches. A team of celebrity judges will then take over and determine the overall winner of this year’s legendary, “Peanut Butter Cup” trophy.
