Dear Montgomery Families,
We celebrate Black History Month to recognize the sacrifices, contributions, and achievements of African Americans to the United States and the world. Black History Month also provides us with an opportunity to hear the voices and experiences of people who have historically been oppressed, ignored, marginalized and overlooked in our country.
This week I would like to lift up Marley Dias, a young voracious reader craving for books that represent the African American female perspective. In November 2015, Dias launched a campaign called #1000BlackGirlBooks. Her goal was simple: collect and donate 1,000 books that feature black girls as the main character. Marley was featured in Forbes magazine for her influence on children’s literature. Read more about her story here.
