May 21 - 25

Good evening Mann Middle School families,

This is Principal Allen Teng, with a look at the week ahead.  We are done with state testing for this year except for those students who have make ups.  If you missed any portion of testing or still have parts to finish, please make sure that you are here every day this week to makeup.  Thank you for all who attended our terrific production of Attack of the Killer Grasshoppers on Thursday, both performances were phenomenal.

It is an exciting week with a few events to celebrate the end of testing.  On Tuesday, we have our School Governance Team meeting at 2:30 pm in the library.  Tuesday, we have grouped a few different events that we hope will be valuable for parents. On Tuesday we will have our annual Multicultural Fair/Reclassification Celebration from 5-6:30 pm in our Quad.  We will have potluck food as well as Karen dancers and Ballet Folklorico.  Tuesday night we've also coordinated with Parent University workshop on Internet Safety at 6 pm in Room A1.  As part of our school wellness efforts, we will also have free blood pressure screenings for families starting at 4:30 pm in room A1.  On June 1, we will have our movie reward for those who had perfect attendance throughout testing.

Eighth graders and all students, it is a time to refocus and really examine our grades in Powerschools as we only have three and a half weeks until the end of the year.  Eighth graders need to maintain a 2.0 GPA in academics and citizenship, less than 30 unexcused absences and no suspensions.  The day after Memorial day on May 29th will be the last day for 8th graders to turn in any make up work.  This Saturday on May 26th from 8 am - 12 pm marks our last Saturday School to make up attendance.  It will also be our community service day for those appealing or redeeming a suspension.

On Friday, we will be having our first Western BBQ coordinated with our food services department.  It is free for students.  Lunches will run a little longer than usual.  Thank you to all those who have already volunteered, if you are interested in volunteer, please contact Ms. Swallow our volunteer coordinator.  Friday is also the day of our first, entirely student run Anti-Bullying/Friendship Carnival put on by the Mann CC-BAO Club.  There will be 8 game booths and 4 food booths along with an attraction.  Admission is free but tickets are 25 cents for rides and food.  It is scheduled to run from 2:30-5 pm in our Quad.

We only have 25 yearbooks left. Pre-order yours now for $30 so you don't miss out. You can order at jostensyearbooks.com or cash in Mann finance office.  Don't forget the Kona Ice fundraiser on Fridays for AVID.

Have a fun but focused week.  Go Cougars, Principal Allen Teng, Mann Middle School.

May 14 - 18

Good evening Mann Middle School families,

This is Principal Allen Teng, with a look at the week ahead.  I was proud of the resiliency and resolve of very high number of students as many worked into their lunches and a few working nearly six hours on their essays as we completed our first week of English Language Arts testing last week.

We will continue our state testing this week with the Math portion of the CAASPP exam on Monday.  Student are encouraged to take their time, use their scratch paper and try on all problems even when they seem difficult.   Students that are on time and have perfect attendance will be eligible for a movie party with popcorn.

Progress reports from Term 4 were mailed on Friday and should be received this week. It is important for students to check their grades in Powerschools and make sure they are turning in work and asking teachers how they may bring up their grades.  Eighth graders, it is especially important as we near the end of the year and they meet the promotion critieria of having a 2.0 GPA in academics and behavior, less than 30 unexcused absences and no suspensions.

We only have 25 yearbooks left. Pre-order yours now for $30 so you don't miss out. You can order at jostensyearbooks.com or cash in Mann finance office.

On Monday, we have a Crawford Cluster with all area principals at 5 pm at Fay Library where we will be going over our restorative practices as a cluster.

This Thursday Mann will be invaded by killer grasshoppers! Come see our school play Attack of the Killer Grasshoppers, Thursday, May 17, 2:30 show for students and a 6:00 pm show for everyone. Tickets are $3.00 and will be sold at lunch and at the door. Parents let your student stay for the 2:30 show, it gets out at 3:30.  Our School Site Council meeting has been moved to Thursday May 31st and our SGT meeting will be May 22nd.

We will have continue fundraising for CC-BAO on Tuesday and Thursday for $2.  We are still taking volunteers for our Western BBQ and Carnival on May 25th.  Don't forget the Kona Ice fundraiser on Fridays for AVID.

Parent California Healthy Kids Surveys are due this week.  These surveys were sent home with first period classes two weeks ago.  These surveys are extremely valuable in defining areas where we can improve as a school.  Students that bring them back and are within the first 250 will receive an Otter Pop.  Any first period class which has 100% returns or is the highest at its grade level at the end of this week will receive a pizza party next week.

This week marks the last week of progress term 4.

We will be having a Townhall meeting on Friday to remind students and they should be goal setting this week.

Parents, this is one of your last opportunities to purchase a Mann Yearbook for this year.  Available on our website or with $30 cash in our Finance Office, it is important to pre-order the yearbook in order to ensure that your student will have a copy.  Only students who have pre-ordered yearbooks will be eligible to attend the ASB Yearbook Signing Party scheduled for June 1st.

Feb 5 - 9, 2018

Good evening Mann Middle School families,

This is Principal Allen Teng, with a look at the week ahead.  Last week we have fun and festive spirit with oodles of students dressed up in Tie-Dye, as Twins and in flannel.  Thanks for your support.  We also had both an English Learner Advisory Committee meeting and School Governance Team Meeting.  We had two parent events including the joint Grade Connect at Crawford on Wednesday and the Parent University on A-G requirements on Tuesday.  This week I am sending out the Mann Week Ahead message a day early for two reasons.  One is to remind that Sunday marks the last day to pre-order a yearbook online at the discounted price of $27.  Second is to solicit parent input on our budget priorities for the new school year.  In the emails and link on our website is an anonymous survey where parents can indicate their preferences and give input on budget priorities similar to one sent to out in the fall.  This Monday we have a School Site Council Meeting scheduled at 2:30 pm in the library.  We plan to vote on our Title I budget for the next school year and would love to have your input.

This week we will be having ELPAC testing for our English learner students which is about 40% of our students.  Ms. Herrera our instructional resource teacher, lit academy teachers, and I met with these students last week to let know what will be expected on this test.  This test is given annually to determine their English proficiency level.  This is the first year of the new test which was previously given in October and called the CELDT.  It is very important and the determining factor whether students reclassify or not.  Please make sure that students eat breakfast, arrive to school on time and get plenty of sleep.  Student will be taking the Reading section on Monday, Writing on Tuesday, Listening on Thursday and Speaking on Friday.  There will be a listening practice in all core classes on Wednesday.

Mrs. Ang and her talent have been working hard on our annual Talent Show with 20 acts this year will be this Thursday at 2:30 pm and again at 6 pm.  Tickets are $3 and will be sold at lunch as well as at the door.  Don't forget the Kona Ice fundraiser on Fridays for AVID and a new fundraiser with the CC-BAO Club will begin the following week selling nachos after school.  In the following week, we will have our Valentines Day dance on February 14th at 2:30 pm.

Have a fabulous week.  Go Cougars, Principal Allen Teng, Mann Middle School.

Jan 29 - Feb 2, 2018

Good evening Mann Middle School families,

This is Principal Allen Teng, with a look at the week ahead.  Monday marks the beginning of a new semester.  I am proud of the efforts of students and teachers in raising grades, taking makeup tests and turning in late work.  We had 54 students attend Saturday School which was a great showing.  Last week, we had a School Governance Team Meeting and a School Site Council Meeting and we will have another SSC meeting to vote on our next year's budget on Thursday at 2:30 pm in the library.

On Tuesday from 5:30 - 7:30 pm, we have a Parent University session on College requirements and preparing during high school.  It will be in our A1 room.

To help usher in the new semester, Mann will have a Spirit Week this week.  On Monday, students participating in spirit week should wear flannel.  On Tuesday, it is pajama day.  Make sure it is still school appropriate and we will make an exception to the sandal rule but students do need to have closed toed shoes for PE.  On Wednesday, students wear funky Tie-Dye like the 60s.  Thursday is Twin or more day.  Friday is Blackout or White-Out day.  Have fun students and show your Mann spirit for the new semester.

This is THE last week to pre-order a yearbook for the discounted price of $27.  The price goes up next week.  We only have a limited number of yearbooks over what is ordered so if you don't pre-order you might miss out.  Last year we ran out.  Anyone who pre-orders can attend the yearbook signing party at the end of the year.  Pay with cash at the finance office or order online at jostensyearsbooks.com

Have a spirited week.  Go Cougars, Principal Allen Teng, Mann Middle School.

On Tuesday, we have an ELAC Meeting at 5 pm in Room A-1.  All of our PIQE parents and any other parents are invited to attend to discuss issues involving English learners at Mann.  We have about three more weeks until permanent semester grades and students need to focus on maintaining at least a 2.0 GPA in Academics and Behavior, no suspensions and not more than 30 unexcused periods of absence.  We offer Saturday School to help makeup attendance.  Our next Saturday School with Ms. Rammel and Ms. Vazquez is offered from 8am - 12 pm in our library with breakfast served free.  Anyone with missed attendance is welcome to attend, see our counselors if you have questions.

We had a great turnout for Saturday School and will be having a study hall intervention on Tuesday for students that need extra support in the English language arts classes.  We have only two weeks until to raise semester grades before they become permanent.  We have over 19 acts try out for our Mann Talent Show.  Practice begins next week for those who have been selected.  On Wednesday, parents are invited to the District Equity Coalition event at Scripps Ranch High School from 5 - 6:30 pm.  Our next Crawford Cluster Area meeting with all area principals will be February 2nd at 5 pm at Fay Elementary library.  We will be holding our Instructional Retreat with Staff on Thursday.  Our School Governance Team Meeting and School Site Councils will be meeting on January 23rd and January 25th.  Don't forget that Wednesdays are Mann Spirit Days and Fridays are College Days.  Show your Cougar Pride!

In honor of Dr. King, one of my personal heroes along with Horace Mann, I would like to end with a quote, "People don't get along because they fear each other. People fear each other because they don't know each other. They don't know each other because they have not properly communicated with each other.  We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools." Go Cougars, Principal Allen Teng, Mann Middle School.

Jan 22 - 25, 2018

Good evening Mann Middle School families,

This is Principal Allen Teng, with a look at the week ahead.  We had a wonderful but short week back from school.  On Thursday, we reviewed expectations and upcoming opportunities for student leadership - we were thrilled that a little less than half of our students currently take advantage of some Mann student leadership opportunity and we look forward to offering more opportunities including the No Place for Hate Group that was trained on Thursday and Friday.

Have a wonderful week. Go Cougars, this is Principal Allen Teng, Mann Middle School.

Jan 8 - 12, 2018

Good evening Mann Middle School families,

This is Principal Allen Teng, with a look at the week ahead.  We hope you had a wonderful and restful winter holiday.  Just a reminder that school will resume bright and early on Wednesday at 7:10 am.  Wednesday is our regular minimum day and Thursday we will be having townhall meeting to remind about classroom and school expectations.  There are only 3 and a half weeks until permanent grades for first semester so now is an opportune time to check grades and work on improving them.

Have a great week back. Go Cougars!  This is Principal Allen Teng, Mann Middle School.

Dec 11 - 15, 2017

Good evening Mann Middle School families,

This is Principal Allen Teng, with a look at the week ahead.  Last week, we had nearly 100 parents attend our parent conferences and 36 parents graduate from the 8 week PIQE program on middle school parenting.  Thanks for your support. We had Google Expeditions come in with their augmented reality system in 7th and 8th grade science classes and Scripps Birch Aquarium came in to do a timely lesson on the Power of Wind with 6th grade science.

This is last week before our Winter Break which runs from December 18th until January 3rd.  Second progress term grades are in Powerschools and should be available for parents who did not pick them up during conferences.  We only have 6 school weeks until the permanent semester 1 grades are finalized so it is important that students monitor their progress, turn in missed assignments and retake tests if offered.

On Thursday of this week, we have our Mann Music Department Winter Concert with both beginning and intermediate students performing at 5:30 pm.  Please support our music fundraiser by purchasing chocolate to help raise funds for the competition trips.  On Friday, we have our student versus staff football game pitting the Primetime and Lunch champions against staff during 6th period.

Have a wonderful and safe holiday break.  We'll see you back after the new year on January 3rd.  Go Cougars, this is Principal Allen Teng, Mann Middle School.

Have a great week back. Go Cougars!  This is Principal Allen Teng, Mann Middle School.

Dec 4 - 8, 2017

Good evening Mann Middle School families,

This is Principal Allen Teng, with a look at the week ahead.  Last week, we had our Stinkyman production on Thursday.  Ms. Ang's students did an incredible job running everything from on-stage to off-stage direction, acting, music, lights and sales.  I am very proud of all their hard work.  We also had Monday study hall, a Wednesday math test retake and Saturday school to support students.  It was great to see the GSA Club students who went ice skating with Ms. Cancilla last night.

This week, we have our Parent Conferences this Thursday from 1 - 3 pm.  Sixth grade teachers will be available in the cafeteria and 7th and 8th grade teachers will be in the library.  You can pickup progress reports from counselors near the 100 building and translators will be available in Spanish, Somali, Arabic, Vietnamese, Karen, Burmese and Swahili.  We will have community groups with resources for parents, a list of which we also sent out with parents via Peachjar.  On Friday, 8th graders who have returned their permission slips by tomorrow will be making their third college field trip, this time to SDSU to meet the women's basketball team and visit the campus.

I encourage parents, especially those already in Primetime to take advantage of the free afterschool academic support in English, Math, History and Science on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 2:35 to 3:35.  Inquire with Primetime, teachers or the front office.

PIQE graduation is this Tuesday at 6 pm; it was great having the dialogue with you last week and it will be exciting to see those 36 parents graduating from the 8 week commitment.

Have a great week back. Go Cougars!  This is Principal Allen Teng, Mann Middle School.

Nov 27 - Dec 2, 2017

Good evening Mann Middle School families,

This is Principal Allen Teng, with a look at the week ahead.  We hope you had a restful Thanksgiving week vacation and got some time to reconnect with family.  We have a busy three week stretch until the winter holiday break from Dec 18 - Jan 2.

This week, some families will be receiving calls for those invited to our Parent Conferences on December 7. We are prioritizing students who may need extra support and we will have a study hall session on Monday and a Math Test retake on Wednesday.  Students should really be keeping track of their grades in Powerschool as Progress Term 2 ends this Friday and students only have six more weeks after that for the permanent grades for Semester 1. History and Math teachers have done binder, planner and grade checks and English teachers and Literacy Academy teachers will be doing the same this month along with some goal setting.

All students are invited to stay for free tutoring this Wednesday to catch up or get help in the library.  Wednesday is also our club day after school where students can do science, learn about the finer things, play ping pong or badminton, or join GSA among other activites.  Primetime afterschool academic support has started and students can receive help in English, Math, History and Science on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 2:35 to 3:35.  Inquire with Primetime, teachers or the front office.

PIQE parent workshops continue this Tuesday at 9:30 am and 6 pm. On Thursday, the Mann Drama Production of Stinkyman is set to premiere.  There will be 2:30 and 6 pm performances.  Tickets are only $2.  Don't forget Wednesday is Mann Spirit Day and Friday is college day.  Wear your gear!

Nov 13 - 17, 2017

Good evening Mann Middle School families,

This is Principal Allen Teng, with a look at the week ahead.  We hope you had a wonderful three day weekend as we honor the service and sacrifice of our nation's veterans.  We have one week of school this week and will be off all of next week for the Thanksgiving holiday.

We had the first half of our Seismic Shake Table Outreach to UCSD on Thursday and Ms. Rammel and Mr. Beck will be taking the other half of eligible sixth grade students on Tuesday.  On Thursday, we will be having our Annual Turkey Trot in P.E. classes as students will be running a cross-country mile all across campus and around construction to settle the question of who will be the fastest long distance Cougar.  If parents would like to volunteer, please contact Ms. Swallow or Ms. Smith, our P.E. Department Chair.  Thursday also is the date of our regular School Site Council Meeting at 2:30 pm in the library.  At 5 pm, there will be a Crawford Area Cluster Meeting at 5 pm in the Fay Elementary library.  The first half of the meeting will be a planning meeting for future cluster meetings and the second half will be a LCAP presentation by the district budget department.  We encourage you to attend this important meeting.

Monday marks the last day to fill out a school choice application for the 2018-2019 school year.  Information can be found on our website under "Neighborhood School and Enrollment Options."  PIQE parent workshops continue this Tuesday at 9:30 am and 6 pm.  Rehearsals hit crunch time as our Fall Mann Drama Production of Stinkyman is set to premiere on Thursday November 30th.  Don't forget Wednesday is Mann Spirit Day and Friday is college day.

Have a thankful week. Go Cougars!  This is Principal Allen Teng, Mann Middle School.

Nov 6 - 9, 2017

Good evening Mann Middle School families,

This is Principal Allen Teng, with a look at the week ahead.  Last Thursday, we had our joint SGT/SSC to get input on the district's budget. We had Saturday School on Saturday.  Last night marked the end of Daylight Savings time, so I hope we hope Mann students were able to fall back and get an extra hour of sleep as we start a new week.  Don't forget to set your clocks back an hour maybe less if you have trouble getting to school on time. This is also a short week this week as Friday is a school holiday in honor of Veterans' Day; our PASS mentors will be doing a lunch activity to recognize and honors the sacrifices of our Veterans.

On Wednesday, 6th grade students will have a townhall meeting during 4th period to discuss expectations and behavior in our progress term 2 and ahead of our first gradewide field trip.  On Thursday, half of 6th grade students who have returned their permission slips and are eligible (no all day detentions or suspensions to be on our non-participation list) will be trying out their earthquake proof structures that they have been working on in their science classes.  They will visit UCSD and utilize the universities Seismic Shake Tables that are used to model architectural and engineering design for real life structures.

Our new Area Superintendent Monika Hazel begins her position this week.  A reminder that next Thursday, November 16th will be our second Crawford Cluster Meeting at Fay Elementary library at 5 pm.  The first 45 minutes will be a planning meeting and the second half will involve a budget presentation around our district's Local Control Accountability Plan and is a great opportunity to give input into district priorities.

The choice window for the 2018-2019 school year closes on November 13.

Have a honorable week. Go Cougars!  This is Principal Allen Teng, Mann Middle School.

Oct 30 - Nov 3, 2017

Good evening Mann Middle School families,

This is Principal Allen Teng, with a look at the week ahead.  Last week was a busy but wonderful week.  We had our first spirit week for Acceptance and Tolerance and Red Ribbon Week.  Pictures can be found on our Twitter and Facebook accounts linked on our website.  Students that participated and checked in with our PASS Mentors at least 4 of the 5 days can get ice cream on Tuesday.  On Thursday and Friday, we also hosted over 500 of our feeder elementary students from our 8 feeder elementaries, I am proud of our student leaders who led the tours and mentored our potential incoming students; our band, orchestra, AVID, technology and theatre students also did a tremendous job presenting the Mann experience.

On Monday, San Diego Unified is sponsoring a districtwide spirit day for Breast Cancer Awareness and students are encouraged to wear pink on Monday to support.  On Tuesday, ASB Leadership has asked to allow students to dress up as long as it is not a distraction to class, it does not violated our dress code, contains no weapons, violence or gore and no masks.  If students make it a distraction, costumes may be confiscated and students asked to change to PE clothes.

We will be having a joint SGT/SSC meeting next Thursday Nov 2 to give feedback on the LCAP plan for the district.

The choice window for the 2018-2019 school year closes on November 13.  Information can be found on our website under "Neighborhood School and Enrollment Options."  PIQE parent workshops continue this Tuesday at 9:30 am and 6 pm.  Don't forget Kona Ice on Friday.

Oct 23 - 27, 2017

Good evening Mann Middle School families,

This is Principal Allen Teng, with a look at the week ahead.  We had good attendance for our first Saturday School - over 40 students working hard to catch up for times they had missed because of absences. You should be receiving end of progress term 1 grades this week in the mail.  On Wednesday, Crawford Connection in conjunction with Crawford and Mann will be hosting a Grade Connect meeting with translation in Spanish, Somali, Vietnamese and Swahili from 4-6 pm at Crawford High School in Room 513. Mr. Lewis, one of Mann's counselors will be available along with translators and Crawford counselors to answer any questions about grades or answer questions on student progress.

This week is Acceptance and Tolerance Week and also Red Ribbon Week.  One of the phenomenal parts of Mann is its incredible diversity with over 30 languages spoken and students from Latin American, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. To help celebrate, our PASS mentors will have activities on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  Each day has a different color theme to represent our student's commitment to unity while celebrating our differences and commitment to being drug-free.

Monday-White (No Hate)

Tuesday- Yellow (Cultural Pride)

Wednesday- Green (One World/Healthy Habits)

Thursday- Black (No Violence, Support Equality)

Friday- Mix Match (Celebrate Diversity)  - Friday is one of my favorite days. I would challenge students to mix it up.  Look for quiet kids or someone who is different than you - introduce yourself, sit next to them and get to know them.  We will be playing Bingo to sit with someone who we don't normally sit next to.

Monday and Tuesday are expected to be warm.  If it is over 93 degrees, our school goes into our hot weather plan where PE classes move indoors or are very limited and we limit physical activities and exposure to the outdoors during lunch.  All of our classrooms are air conditioned at Mann.  Please dress your children appropriately for the weather also keep in mind that tanktops or shirt showing midriff do violate our dress code.

On Tuesday, we have our School Governance Team meeting at 2:30 pm in the library.  On Thursday and Friday, we are excited to host Mann W.E.B. Days for our eight feeder elementary schools for incoming 5th grade students.  Sixth and 7th grade students have been preparing to lead student tours and our elective teachers and sixth grade teachers are ready to give incoming students a taste of Mann.  The band and orchestra will perform and Mr. Lara's technology class has been preparing video drone flights.

Wednesday is our second club day which is four Wednesday of the month.  All students are invited to come participate from 12:45 - 1:30 pm in a range of clubs from Science, Badminton, GSA, math or others.  Students can also come for free tutoring the library during this times, especially those struggling on their progress reports.

The choice window for the 2018-2019 school year closes on November 13.  Information can be found on our website under "Neighborhood School and Enrollment Options."  PIQE parent workshops continue this Tuesday at 9:30 am and 6 pm.  Don't forget Kona Ice on Friday.   We will be having a joint SGT/SSC meeting next Thursday Nov 2 to give feedback on the LCAP plan for the district.

Sept 11 - 14, 2017

Good evening Mann Middle School families,

This is Principal Allen Teng, with a look at the week ahead.  Last week, we passed out textbooks; with our increased enrollment, we backordered books for some 6th graders which should arrive from the district office.  This week, we are looking to collect forms from students who not turned in all their school permissions.  Those will be going home with their first period teachers on Monday.  Please return as soon as possible.  Monday is September 11th, and history teachers will be reviewing the events on that tragic day.  Having visited the 9/11 Memorial over the summer and seeing the response to the recent hurricanes, I believe in the memorial motto that "in darkness, we shine brightest."   On Wednesday, we have Back to School Night.  It runs from 5:00 - 6:30 pm.  From 5:00 to 5:15 pm, I will be doing a brief introduction in the auditorium.  From 5:15 - 5:30 pm, science teachers will be available to answer questions about our sexual health units in 6th and 8th grades which parents are free to opt out of for their students.  Teachers will be in their rooms from 5:15 - 6:30 pm to go over their syllabus, course descriptions and classroom policies.   We will continue to enforce dress code and tardy policies. Just a reminder, if you are dropping off and picking up, please use the white zones on 54th St - walkers need to come in and out of 54th street.  PE began last week.  PE uniforms can be purchase with cash in our finance office from 6:30 am - 2:30 pm for $15; locks are $6 and important to secure personal possessions.

Have a stellar week!  Go Cougars!  This is Principal Allen Teng, Mann Middle School.

Sept 5 -8, 2017

Good evening Mann Middle School families,

This is Principal Allen Teng, with a look at the week ahead.  We had a great first week and just a reminder that tomorrow is Labor Day, a school holiday.  We will resume school on Tuesday at 7:10 am.  Just a reminder, if you are dropping off and picking up, please use the white zones on 54th St. All students walking to and from school should go through the 54th street opening under the marquee.  During the first week, we sent home an LCFF form, thank you for all the parents and students who have returned it; if you have not, students can return it to the attendance office.  For the second week, we will begin enforcing dress code and enforcing our tardy policies.  Please help your child develop the habit of being on time by setting a regular bed time, wake up time and morning routine.  If we do not have excessive heat, PE will begin this week.  PE uniforms can be purchase with cash in our finance office for $15; locks are $6. Students can also bring their own gray T-shirt and black athletic shorts and combination lock.  As forewarning, students will be getting all their books at once and can keep them at home but bringing them home can be a chore.  Seventh grade textbooks will be checked out through English classes on Tuesday, sixth graders with Cooper or Blaylock will be bringing home textbooks on Wednesdays, eighth graders will be on Thursday and those that have Weathers, Hang, Fernandez, or Rawson for English will checkout on Friday.  A reminder that Back to School Night is Thursday September 13th beginning at 5 pm.

Have a splendid second week, Cougars!  This is Principal Allen Teng, Mann Middle School.

August 27, 2017

Good evening Mann Middle School families,

We are so excited to begin the new school year.  We are grateful that you entrust your precious children with us and we make safety our first priority for families.  It was wonderful to see all the new Mann families who came to our New Student Orientation on Monday; we went over tips for the new year and I have posted the Powerpoint to our website (linked here.)  Please pardon our construction, the crew has gotten everything ready to open the parking lot for the first day.  We tend to have more traffic the first week, please be patient and safe.  If students are walking to school this year, they need to come in through the 54th street entrance and walk under the electronic marquee - there is no longer a walkway through the parking lot.  If you are dropping off, use the white zones on 54th St or please make a U loop coming in and out on the Trojan St. entrance to our parking lot.  We recommend getting here early by 6:45 am if you intend to walk your child in or come by to ask questions.  We recommend all students come by 7 am the first day to get their schedule as there will be long lines.  School releases at 2:12 pm.

All students will come in to our quad and line up by grade level to receive their schedule; we also provide them a planner, binder, pencil pouch, paper, and two pencils for the first day!  If you have questions, visit our information booth at the front of the school.  If you are new to our school and do not come from Euclid, Fay, Ibarra, Rolando Park, Oak Park, Clay, Carver or Marshall, visit our attendance office to enroll.  Fifth graders from our 8 feeders are automatically enrolled and can just get a schedule even if you did not come to orientation.  If you are receiving this message and do not plan to attend Mann, please visit our office or call Teri Smith at (619) 582-8990 x 2209.

Parents, two things you can do to help the school.  First, on the first day, students will receive an important LCFF Form with their name, it is very important that it is bubbled with income, signed and returned the following day.  Second, please make sure students are on time.  Our attendance figures for the first 3 periods as well as the LCFF forms are used to make determinations on staffing and funding.  Other school papers to return and textbook check will begin the second week.  On Wednesday, we will be having townhall meetings at all grade levels to welcome back students, go over expectations and kick off the new year.  Rules, school calendars, and important dates can be found in the student planners and also on the student handbook under policies on our website (link here.)  Don't forget every Wednesday is a minimum day with students getting out at 12:40 pm.

The district put out an advisory that our first week is suppose to be hot, please dress your student accordingly keeping our dress code in mind (no tanktops or short shorts.) Students will not dress out for PE the first week to allow them to purchase clothes from our financial office with $10 or $15 cash.  Locks are also required for PE lockers and can be purchased for $6 or students can bring their own.

Thank you to student leaders: Jennifer, Aniah, Michelle, Kellonna, Nicholas and Isabella for coming in to help put together binders last week, you rock!  We have some wonderful things planned this year for Mann and we can't wait to get started.  Have a outstanding first week Cougars!  We'll see you bright and early at 7 am on Monday morning.
